MemberYou cannot just copy the folders over most of the time it will not work. What you can do but it sucks is rename the file extension from id2 to png and add them back one by one or use a program like EmoAdder. Just looked and the custom emotes are stored in C:Documents and SettingsLocal SettingsApplication DataMicrosoftMessengerObjectStore. That is with a clean install of WLM with never having MSN Messenger installed. I would get MSN BackUp and use it though.

MemberOk, backed up my MSN live smilies I wanted to mess with, now, what programs do I use to edit them? I have CS2, and Imageready CS2. Do I seriously need to rename them and stuff afterwards though? -_-
Also, anyone with those red fox dudes, can you give them to me as GIFs so I can edit them into (Obviously by looking at my user name) renamons? lol

I’ve had no luck finding my emoticons.. I’ve gone through the paths, the first mentioned led me to numbered folders with a folder inside saying “User titled” or something, the next search:
C:Documents and SettingsLocal SettingsApplication DataMicrosoftMessengerObjectStore
There was no object store folder to be seen.
then u shud try the above mentioned softwares like icon backup ….
you can extract and backup material of msn

MemberUm, whoops, edited, thought someone would see that… my bad.. I got them out, but, what do I do to edit .MCO files? Also as said in there, I’m looking for those red fox dude icons. :p
Do I rename the files as .GIF?

Memberwell i copied the emoticos from my office manually going to the directory & even located teh msn emoticons on my laptop as path provided in the posts.. & to add them to my lappy’s MSN i first made batch rename to gif extension & then have added manually my fav emoticons to this msngr.
NO MATTER WHAT U HAV IN UR HAND , U CAN COPY IT.June 18, 2007 at 8:56 pm #134356Renamon
MemberThat made… absolutely no sense to me, lol. I tried to GIF the files, but imageready has issues with them, any other ideas?
June 19, 2007 at 3:43 pm #134342DEVILSAN
Memberif u us the software to extract the files & rename to gif then opening makes difference if you manually locate the emoticon folder & rename each the file (like u can use Batch rename software @ 1 go ).
First dont use image ready to open gif file
right click gif file> properties > Advanced > change > select to open with windows Picture and Fax viewer(assumed that u hav OS Win 2003 or Win XP or Vista).Imageready is having problem because the software that you have used to extract has done its own encoding. even the Windows picture & Fax viewr wont open the file.
i suggest you to manually locate the folder & copy it to wher u want hav rename as i mentioned above.

Memberok i had the problem of trying to find the icons earlier so that i could back them up for my girlfriend due to having to wipe the drive and reinstall the OS. Now that I have started fresh with the new Windows live messenger I’ve got the old icons and trying to add them so that she can use them on her current messenger however for whatever reason i would like to figure out is that when i go to the documents&settings>User>Microsoft>MSN>###blabla there is no other folders in this directory other than a few .sqm’s
she has already added a few new icons to her messenger since then and would like to keep those along with adding the old ones from before we wiped the drive. so now i’m sitting here with no able location of these current icons as well as a CustomEmoticons folder full of .dat files that i had saved from the previous drive.
all folders and files including extensions are un-hidden and i’ve tried doing a search for all files and folders for any .dat’s that may lead me to where her newer messenger icons are located, as well as searching for anything containing the words custom, icon, emoticon, etc. with no luck.
currently running a Windows XP pro. version 2002 SP2, with windows live messenger version 8.1
i’m tearing my hair out trying to figure out what the hell is wrong with this thing, weather it be the fact that it’s WindowsLiveMessenger instead of MSN messenger? my next step will be to download and install MSN messenger from the website and see if that makes any difference, but other than that i have no idea what is wrong and/or why i am unable to add the old icons or why i’m unable to find any of the new icons she’s added to it since. anybody that knows what i’m talking about or that might be able to assist please respond.
EDIT:
ok i was confused and skipped local settings, and went straight to application data, now my issue is figuring out how to add the new icons, with the version i’m using now the WindowsLiveMessenger 8.1 they’re all dt2 files which are different from the dat files i saved from the other version before wiping the system. I’ve tried adding the dat files into the folder, restart, no change. I’ve tried changing the .dat files to .dt2 files, restart, no change. still trying to figure that out -
