I’ve stepped up my activity in the introductions forum so that
1. Folks feel welcome and want to come back; and can get the help they’re after and
2. I can reach 100 posts before we get the 40,000th member 😉My question is about the first endeavor. Some of the folks asked questions in their introductory post so I put links in to pop them onto the forum that I think could help them. Then, later I noticed they had been moved to those other forums. So, I’m wondering, how these newbies know where their post went, just in case they don’t click on the title. I think it’s a great idea to get the post where it can be seen by folks that can help in that specific area, I’m just hoping the new member can find the answer.

But, just to put your mind at ease, in the past, every time I’ve moved a post, I send the new member a little note welcoming them and telling them where their post has gone to.
We’ve also had discussions between the staff about when do we tell a member or correct them and when do we simply just make alterations. Some folks feel embarased and are less likely to come back if they get a note or if they are corrected publically and are more inclined to simply being shown what needs to be done, and eventually catch on. So, lately, the staff has been trying the concept to just move and correct without commenting simply for the comfort and embarasment of the new member.
So, yeah, heh, it’s funny because it seems we’re getting conflicting strands here. Some people seem to think that telling people what they did is rude, and some folks are concerned about newbies not being notified and told the rules. heheh…quite the catch 22. *rubs her head* But we’re trying.
And I absolutely love how concerned you are for the new folks, thanks so much for being so involved, believe me, everyone appreciates it.
July 27, 2006 at 4:10 am #149055Jeff HesterKeymasterPolarBearNPR, do you have a suggestion for handling moving topics from the introductions forum? There is a “redirect” capability that will leave a marker in the forum the topic was originally posted. Would that be helpful?
July 27, 2006 at 4:45 am #149056shifterMemberI think the majority of the staff do leave the redirects when they move a post as you can see in the Introduction Forums where the topics begin with “Moved:”. This then leaves the link to the posted topic in the original forum it was posted in, as well as linking directly to the moved topic in the proper forum.
Another great way to find your recent posts is to go to Quick Links -> My Profile and click on either the “Find all posts by username” or the “Find all threads started by username”. This will give you a list of all your posts, starting with the most recent.
Also, subscribing to your topics will also send you an email everytime someone responds to your post. To subscribe to a topic you can choose your prefered notification type using the options at the bottom of the create post page, or alternatively while on the topic you want to subscribe to, simply choose Topic Tools and Subscribe to this Topic at the top of the first post.
Oh, and easiest of all, just click the search button and type in your username and it should pull it up as well.
Of course, it might be cool to have a sidebar that lists your most recent posts for easier access. That would sure help new users who aren’t too sure of where to go to find that post they just made.
One problem I can see is when a topic title is changed to something more descriptive, perhaps there could be something stating what it was called previously? But of course a quick email or PM would do the trick as well.

Would that be helpful?Again, not being computer-savvy myself, something that says “click here for the moved topic” would help me most. However, I have a feeling that most folks who take the time to join are used to clicking on things that are underlined and blue to find them. I’m assuming this is the “redirect” of which you speak. And a quick note letting someone know that the post was moved so they can get the help as soon as possible seems perfect for this forum. I think most folks would be receptive to this as they came here for help and that is the fastest way to get it.
Actually, it sounds like you all have your ducks in a row and things are going well. I did make a mistake when I first came here and was gently told what happened and why. I was happy for the learning experience since I know that all forums are different and just need to be played with a bit to get the feel.
Maybe querrying some newbies within a month of joining about their experiences and suggestions for improvement – even with a simple link to that forum would get some good response.
Thanks, all for taking the time to help me understand this Big Blue Ball.
