ParticipantI looked, but I don’t think there are any out there. What’s wrong with waiting for a sentence to be typed and sent? I really did Google some for you, but a real-time instant messenger is considered to be AIM, Y!, GT, ect.

MemberI’m working on a project for deaf and hearing impaired people, for them it is important to see the action. (so I’m told) It gives them more the idea of having a real conversation than getting the information by sentence. But thanks for the replies.

When you talk you don’t hear like “h.e.l.l.o” you hear “hello”. Maybe have a video chat like thing and whenever they speak or the other person speaks, each word they say is made into text and sent? I hope that makes sense.

and for the record, i’m not aware of any instant messengers that send letter by letter. you’d have to be EXTREMELY accurate while typing to avoid confusing the other person.

MemberTrue, we are working on a “video phone” solution, but the bandwith needed for a good conversation is about 2000kbps (upstream and downstream) (2sif and 25fps) which is no problem on a LAN, but for a WAN is somewhat high. I know that in the beginning of intant maeesging there have been some chat programs that worked within a LAN surrounding that sended the characters one by one over the network.
I’ve talked this through this with several people and there wish is the character based solution. I know that old ICQ version had this function based on a peer to peer connection which was created. But the new ICQ version don’t support this anymore.

MemberYou don’t really need that high of an FPS for a video phone. Just think about the current webcam over IM applications, they get, what, 2-5fps? And it’s been reported working on dialup.
In addition, most people have more than 2Mbps up nowadays, so even if that fast of internet was required, it wouldn’t be much of a problem.
