I’ve been drooling over the new iPads since they were announced. They look damn sexy and even without seeing one yet, my instinct says “I want one!”
I was wondering if anyone else here on BBB wants an iPad, or already has one? Would you get the 3G version? Why or not?
Personally, I’m thinking of saving the money and getting the regular wifi version. I’ve already got an iPhone, and I could tether the iPad to that via wifi if I wanted. Not only will I save the initial cost, but also the monthly data service.
And if you have one, I’m curious to hear how you’re using it. Does it mostly stay at home where you likely have wifi, or do you take everywhere you go? What do you use it for? How do you like it? What are the “must have” apps?
Cheers!

The downside to the tethering (if you already have an iPhone with unlimited data) is that you have to pay the extra $20 for the tethering feature, but you also have to go from the unlimited data plan to the one with the 2GB cap on it. (Meaning you can’t have unlimited data and tethering.) Using the phone as a tethering device might run through 2GB fairly fast – and it’s $10/GB if you go over.
For $5 more ($25 per month) you get the 2GB on the iPad and can keep your unlimited data plan on the phone. That’s what I plan on doing. I’ll take unlimited data on my phone over tethering – especially with Netflix slated to come to the iPhone later this summer.
I’ll let you know how I like the iPad when I get it. It’s going to be a couple of weeks before I can give any feedback.
June 10, 2010 at 5:10 am #175386YahooliganMemberpatndoris, I don’t have an iPad (yet) but I will get one. Need to let the wallet fatten up a bit first.
I already have an iPhone with unlimited data and I am already tethering. You just need to jailbreak your phone (super easy to do) and install MyWi ($9.95). It essentially turns your iPhone into a wireless router and you can tether multiple devices simultaneously. I tether my laptop this way all the time. Another friend of mine who already has his iPad (the non 3G version) uses that very setup to access the internet from his iPad.
So it can be done, and without paying through the nose. Just don’t get caught doing it.
June 11, 2010 at 2:21 pm #175381GandalfMember@yahooligan – you better hope at&t doesn’t back charge you with some heavy fees for tethering. It seems like there must be some way for them to tell if you are doing unauthorized tethering with a jailbroken phone. I know it’s not illegal, but it probably breaks their TOS and opens you up to getting raped with charges and fees.
Just sayin…

😛

Fall through? That would suck.
I’m currently fundraising to get an iPad. I’m going for the bottom of the line model with wifi only. I’ll use it mainly at home where I have wifi, and tether on those rare occasions when I don’t.
I’m selling off some of my old stuff on Craigslist to raise money for the iPad, including my Mac PowerBook and my iPhone 2G. Let me know if you’re interested. 😉
June 14, 2010 at 6:20 am #175383detn8rParticipantI played with an iPad at my local Best Buy. It’s smaller than I thought it was, but not something I’d personally crave. It does however look like an over sized iPod though. Speaking of which, how does all those who finally went out and got the iPhone 3G on a new cell contract feel about the new v4 coming out? Don’t know about the folks down south or anywhere else for that matter, but the 3G hasn’t even been out a year yet here in Canada and a newer version that apparently kicks the ass of all previous versions has a lot of those with the new contracts steamin’!
My currently BlackBerry pisses me off with the new Bold out, but I’m stil stuck for two more years on my current contract, but damn is it ever tempting to fall out of love with your new phone quickly. Bastard phone companies!

If I were in the market for a new phone sure – but there’s nothing wrong with my less than one year old one. I’ll be able to run the new OS on the 3GS and the new features such as the cameras and better graphics just don’t hold enough of a benefit for me to justify getting a new one.
As for the iPad – if mine falls through I think I’ll take it as a sign to wait for awhile. They will probably be cheaper in a year anyway – and I really wanted the unlimited data which isn’t going to happen now.
When you played with the iPad what were your impressions of the keyboard? Was it clumsy feeling or did you feel you could adapt to it fairly easily? That’s one of my biggest gripes about the iPhone. Even after a year I have to hunt and peck to send messages. I’ve just never gotten the hang of the touch keyboard on the tiny screen.

The screen’s much bigger — I wouldn’t have a problem using it. Just as annoying as typing on a laptop for that matter =p
