OK…i know there is the IMchaos thing and other sites that you set up a link that directs someone to a website…and if you click on your own profile link you are directed to a site thru IMchaos or others that allow you to see who has clicked on the link in your profile.
But this doesnt work for the savvy pc user for one simple reason…all they need to do is place the cursor over the link and the true address comes up HML…and theyre not fooledso my question is…how can you find out who is looking at your “get buddy info” without this technique?
what other ways are there to see who is watching you or to see who is clicking on your profile?
Ive searched all over the web…i cant find anything, but i know there is a way, ive heard its possible…can anyone help?
thanks

April 27, 2005 at 11:24 pm #120559surfsledMemberReally?? Ive Been Told It Is
April 28, 2005 at 12:20 am #120555aznballa161Participantyou’ve been told wrong. there always has to be a certain kind of link in your profile where someone clicks on it for it to work.
April 28, 2005 at 12:32 am #120551TigerbladeParticipantaznballa161 is correct… this has been asked so many times before that it’s been included in the AIM Frequently Asked Questions topic… you cannot track who looks at your profile unless you use a link.
end of story, sorry.
April 28, 2005 at 12:42 am #120557RustyMemberWhat maybe if it was your site you could use an IP thing that shows who is on your site I don’t know where it is but I know there is a code you can use at http://www.dynamicdrive.com.
April 28, 2005 at 3:09 am #120552TigerbladeParticipantrusty… that has nothing to do with checking your aim profile. the only way that would work is if you had some kind of subprofile hosted on your own site, but people would have to click a link to get there in the first place.
surfsled wanted to know if there was a way to check without them clicking a link. which there isnt. there’s not really anything else to say.

**however, if someone is viewing your profile from trillian and they have the minibrowser plugin, meta-refreshes in your profile will work for them… This will not work for anyone who views it in AIM or anything else.
April 28, 2005 at 5:13 pm #120556Jon8RFCMemberTry out http://www.smartprofile.net , the link can’t be changed like imchaos. It’s pretty slick.
April 28, 2005 at 6:53 pm #120549Jeff HesterKeymasterwhat you could do is “hide” the link under another url. this way you could make a person click a link which leads them to something other than what they think. one way would be to get this link on a search engine such as google, and then create word searches for text that is found on that page. then link the user to the google “i’m feeling lucky” link. for example: http://google.com/search?q=drugs&btnI, which leads you to “drugs.com” instead of google. hiding the link in side some kind of redirection service would be nice too (http://xrl.us/, http://tinyurl.com/, http://dot.tk/, http://cjb.net/)
but obviously if the only way this “IMchaos” gets the screenname of the user is by the link, you’re in trouble. this is because the link has to be crafted before hand and therefore it cannot contain screennames.
April 28, 2005 at 7:53 pm #120553TigerbladeParticipantyou’ve all missed the whole point of the original post. he doesn’t want them to have to click on a link. everything being posted about links this and links that is irrelevant, because he asked if there was a way to do it without links. there’s already a hundred threads asking about links tracking profile views on the forums….
his question was if there was a way to track profile views without the person clicking a link. the answer is no.
shouldn’t that be the end of the discussion?
April 28, 2005 at 10:08 pm #120560surfsledMemberExactly!! I asked if there was another way besides using a link…for this reason:
THE PERSON VIEWING YOUR PROFILE CAN HOLD THE CURSOR OVER THE LINK AND THE TRUE LINK APPEARSEXAMPLE: If on my profile i have a link that says “Click here for some funny articles”
I would be trying to direct them to fark.com …BUT…if they just hold the cursor over “click here for some funny articles” …this will pop up…
click here for some funny articles!
Then they can see its through IMchaos and theyre not fooled!
What other options are there? Is there anyway to prevent the true link from popping up? or is there some sofware that you can download to monitor who is viewing your profile?
Thanks Again
