MemberGreat one, Tigerblade, that is so annoying. We all get the point. Nobody wants caps lock always on. The user’s idea is that it will draw more attention and they will get their reply sooner. To summarize, use good grammar, don’t stand out, and wait. Your post will be answered if you are polite, don’t use slang lik dis, and be informative. Now I sound like a moderator and I don’t mean to. Put these things in policies, guidelines or wherever it fits. We may have to go further. I think we will. I’m using kind of short sentences too, don’t do that.

Memberi will agree with the fact that all caps is DEFINATLY HARD TO READ, and people have often said, if your going to learn how to spell something, dont learn it in CAPS, cus all the words look the same, or somin like that :-S

MemberI did not read anyone elses post.. After I first seen shadow slayer’s post about the short hand things as gtg etc.
I do not use those types a slang but a few.Lets pretend were in a conversation
Example:
Me: Hey
ShadowSlayer: Hey, how are you?
Me: Doing pretty good yourself?
Shadow Slayer: Not to bad, just got back from the movies.
Me: Ahh, pick up any nice girls/guys? Laugh out loud
Shadow Slayer: Laugh out loudOr this
Me: Hey
ShadowSlayer: Hey, how are you?
Me: Doing pretty good yourself?
Shadow Slayer: Not to bad, just got back from the movies.
Me: Ahh, pick up any nice girls/guys? lol
Shadow Slayer: lolAs in lol.. Just an example
Sorry, not sure if you are a girl or a guy, please don’t take offence.

KeymasterShorthand is great for instant messages, where brevity helps the flow of a live exchange. Usually when I’m instant messaging with someone, I’ll use all lower case and many acronyms (brb, g2g, cya, lol, etc.). But a discussion in a forum is an asynchronous exchange; there is a delay of seconds, minutes or even days before a reply is received. So brevity doesn’t help “keep the dialog moving.” In fact, it often has the opposite effect, instead requiring the reader to translate the slang into English (or whatever), ultimately slowing down the communication process.
Basically, all my posts in any forum generally use proper spelling, grammar, punctuation and sentence structure. Forums are more formal and structured than a chat room or an instant message. Unlike chat rooms and IMs, a forum discussion is read and re-read thousands of times. This permanence warrants a little extra time and care when writing.

KeymasterI agree that it’s good for emphasizing a FEW words. But when an entire topic or subject is in caps, the emphasis is lost.

MemberSo basically if you can’t use proper grammer, punctuation, or spelling, find another forum to post in, or go back to school and re-take that english class that you failed in high school. Use common sense when posting, i.e. if you don’t think someone will understand what you are saying, maybe you should elaborate on the subject a little bit, or provide more specifics. For those with NO common sense this post just went right over your head.

MemberI don’t think CAPS type is necessarily that hard to read, especially when you’re exposed to it often. What really bothers me is the combination of bad punctuation, slang, and SPELLING errors. I think improper spelling makes people look like an idiot more than using CAPS or abbreviation, such as thx, lol, brb. (i hope i spelled abbreviation right or i’ll look like a total idiot. lol)

MemberTo me, all CAPS is more annoying then slang stuff, because I learnt to be fluent in that sort of thing in AOL chats… >.>;
Anyway, I agree with Jeff, when someone writes a huge block of text in CAPS, you just want to ignore it and skip to whatever is next in normal size.September 20, 2003 at 3:36 am #56476spacecamper
MemberI hate all caps. That’s why for all the years I have been using a computer, it has been practically ignored unless I am that annoyed. I prefer to capitalize one letter with the shift key. To me, it’s just plain and simple forum etiquette.
And about slang, I think that should only be used in chatrooms, where a lot of people type that type of language. In here, BBB is a respected environment for us to hang out, so we should type normally. 🙂

ParticipantYou guys are my heroes. 🙂 Over the last six months or so, I’ve created a list of what I call my Forum Pet Peeves which I think you’ll enjoy. Page 2, the Grammar page, is what applies mostly to this discussion.
(Note: 2004-04-19 – site was hacked a few weeks ago and I haven’t gotten the list back up.)

KeymasterGreat list, Decius! Your peeves are dead-on!
Anyone who really wants to be taken seriously should read your list and learn.

Memberok……i must say, somewhere i lost the focus on what was focused on.
i most generally dont have time to worry about whether i am in proper grammar or spelling or if the caps are on or what, but i will say this, the people that are using font soooooo confusing that you have to look at it several times just to read the first sentence oughta have theyre keys removed!!!!
otherwise ….caps locked…no prob…slang …lmao…no prob…just have to hang out in there a bit more is all. chat rooms have a language all theyre own and as ppl always say”opinions are like___holes everyone has one”.
i wasnt an english major but sometimes we take the small stuff just a bit too seriously …..dont we? -
