MemberI think its ok to use slang because if you chat alot I don’t think you would want to type the whole word out. But for caps I agree its hard to read and it look like you’re yelling when they all caps. Anyways its a free country you could do anything you want you cannot stop them from doing it.

Uhh, the internet is global, and it is not free. You do not have “free speech” or any of that, unless you own the bandwidth, the server, the connection and the backbone.
If you chat that much… I’d think you’d know how to type fast enough that you wouldn’t need slang..

Firstly, I already did have “Free Speech” even thought I don’t own any of that -LOL-. Secondly, thats your opinion not mine…so leave my opinion alone:)

ParticipantJust remember that “Free Speech” does not mean “No Rules”. When you registered with our forums you agreed to follow all of our rules. Sure you can say whatever you like here without being arrested, but it doesn’t mean you won’t be banned from the site. Although English based, this is a global community of users and many do not understand “slang” terms. Keep your posts in legible english and the chances of misunderstandings are greatly diminished. We just want a friendly environment that’s easy for all of our members to read and share information. Slang is fine for talking to your friends on IM or chat, but in a global community it is rude and gives you no respect among your peers here. Perhaps some don’t care about this, but we do. Why not help make this forum friendly for all of our members rather than just the “hip” IM slangers. 🙂

MemberI don’t know if I am right but when I fisrt become a member the ”Rules” doesn’t say anything about slang or caps unless you guys just made this up… so what i’m saying is people could do anything they want with their typing. And woops cross out the
“free country”part.
Well…If some people can’t understand “slang” then they should ask you guys.
Since this site is about smart people answering dumb people’ question:D right?December 12, 2004 at 8:04 am #56483Spike

It shouldn’t matter what the rules say (who reads those EULA’s anyway? ;)), you should have a compulsion to type in plain English so your peers on this site can understand you better. You make it more enjoyable for everyone here, as well. For instance:
Slang: hey can sum1 please hlp me with this photoshop prjct plz? I dont get the 2nd btn w/ th img of a right arrow.
Real: Hello, can someone please help me with this Photosho project? I don’t understand what the second button with the right arrow on it is.
Now which would you rather read? Personally, it’s a chore to decipher slang, that’s why I don’t use it.

MemberCAPS ARE SOOO ANNOYING! And yes, I did that on purpose, because I am EMPHASIZING that I have a strong dislike for it. However, like many people stated in this thread, it is acceptable in certain terms.
Once in a while, I find myself using slang on the forums. I use shortcuts such as (but not limited to): lol, btw, b/c, cuz, ppl, and dunno, perhaps a few others.
i find myself typing in all lower case letters a lot, because, it is sometimes easier to do that if you are in a rush, like I am most of the time. sometimes I will do a quick post or two before I have to catch the shuttle to class, so I just type all lower case.
i also find that I leave out apostrophes in certain words such as dont, cant, and wont, but, I am educated and I know to end my sentences in periods, and use commas where necessary. I just choose not to.
So, now that I’ve stated my reasons for using such tactics, I am wondering…do you guys really hate it that much when I use shorthand? Or, is it understandable, because I am not abusing it?
PS: My personal opinion on why people use the number 2 instead of spelling it out, is because they probably are lacking knowledge in which to use.
Let’s have a grammar lesson!
Two-the spelling of the number
To-use if you are going someplace, in the present or future (i.e.: “I am running to the store quick,” or “I am going to Jim’s house around 3:00”
Too- use when you are referring as besides or also (i.e.: I would like to come, too), an excessive degree (i.e.: these pants are too large for me), very (i.e.: Tony didn’t seem too interested in that movie), or the word ‘so’ when used second (i.e.: “I did not hit you!” “You did too!”)I’m not lecturing. Just please use common courtesy to the others reading the thread. And now that you are educated in the English language, try to practice. It will benefit you in the long run. 🙂
EDIT: Darn spell check, I try to type in lower case letters, and it automatically changes the lower case “i” to upper case “I” but you get the idea…

MemberUhh, it’s not about “Free Speech”, either, in case you haven’t read your own posts, so let’s get back on topic.
I don’t like people who use all caps.
There, we’re back on track.:D

Since this site is about smart people answering dumb people’ question:D right?Just because they don’t understand your snide hip slang doesn’t mean they’re stupid, you should be more considerate and sensitive to people that don’t speak english as their second language. How would you like it if you didn’t understand an australian slang word (a country that also speaks english by the way, so that just shows that native language doesn’t mean there isn’t unknown slang) and someone called you dumb? Sounds rather rash and unintelligent to me.
And Second of all, this site is not about smart people answering dumb peoples questions. This site is about people coming together and helping eachother out. What one person might be smart in another might be uneducated in, but that same uneducated person still has things they can help with. And really if you want to get down to it, BBB is about helping people out and being informed about Instant Messengers in particular. The rest of it is just perks.
Thirdly, I know that people would definately appreciate if you restrained from calling ESL(English as a second language) people “stupid” for not understanding slang. You might be a “Cute” bomber chick but looks are only skin deep and you’re obviously not very thoughtful or sympathetic to call them such things.

MemberI totally agree with RK on this one. You shouldn’t think that about people, and if you do, you should keep it to yourself. Not a lot of people here want to hear about all that, especially the ones you could be hurting.
Lets get back on topic, eh? Maybe you’ll disagree with me, but these discusions should be done outside of BBB.

Memberwell… I was being sarcastic but at one point you guys are right “i was not being thoughtful to whatever I said.

MemberWhat is the purpose of the Caps Lock key anyway? The only time I use it, is if I have hit it by accident when my hands are trying to move as fast as my thoughts.

MemberCaps lock key= I think its use for when you’re feeling mad or when you feel like yelling.
