I saw a story today that shocked me. There is a heart treatment that would help African-Americans more than any other group. I thought at first AWESOME (African-Americans are at greater risk for heart disease). THEN, I heard people actually saying that they didn’t want to approve this new medicine because it was on “racial grounds” That’s when I said “**** THAT!” I feel if a medicine or treatment is going to help people…who the HELL cares if it’s just for one group?? The things learned may help other people.
Think about it this way, Viagra came out and it was just for men…NO ONE complained about that…isn’t that GENDER grounds then? AND now there is a female form of Viagra… It just seems foolish to me to hold something back because of what “SOME” people might think. Anthropolgically, Africans and those from SOUTHERN EUROPE have a lot of similarities in kinds of diseases and allergies (it’s not that hard to see that this med might actually help others in the long run).
SURE, the study was just run on African-Americans…but their risk of heart disease is much greater…so why not? I bet more studies are done on Caucasian and Asian women for Osteoporosis because it’s more common amongst those groups. Does anyone else find this possibility of NOT using the drug….DISGUSTING?Here’s an article about it: New Drug

Racial medicines may be a good thing but then if the companies stop there and do not try it out on other comunities that is a bad thing. Seems like the patent provides no incentive for the company to test the drug on other comunities.
I feel this is linked to a bigger problem the problem of patents and how it does not motivate companies to find other uses for their drungs and how the companies charge HUGE amounts for their patented drugs even in places like Africa where they know people can not afford to pay so much.
It is also sad to see that drug companies do not try to find cures for third world problems like malaria.
Personally I am against the patent system the amount of time that companies have exclusive rights to sell a drug should be reducedNovember 9, 2004 at 8:46 pm #104273OreoMemberThe article was on a different slant than the TV spot I saw on the local news. I included the article to give a reference point. There were already talks of it being tried on others besides African-Americans, as mentioned on the news. What got me most annoyed was that they were not willing to approve it…even though it could help others. And YES, many drug companies need to rethink what they are doing and decide if what they are doing is for the greater good of humankind or the greater good of a few band accounts.
