December 16, 2003 at 11:10 pm #87234Jeff HesterKeymasterYeah, but does it kick the llama’s ass?
In all seriousness, I used Winamp 3 for almost a year before finally reverting back to Winamp 2 (faster and leaner but not as cool looking).
Could anyone who has actually tried Winamp 5 share their initial feedback? Did they really deliver on their promise to give us the best of 2 + 3?

eh… its pretty decent. still undecided on whether or not to keep it. yeah there’s a lot of extra stuff you can do compared to 2.9 (not sure about 3, only had it for roughly an hour), like:
]] internet radio/tv (which is kinda interesting actually)]] a lot of different color schemes, and of course skins…
]] drawers for options… the equalizer, color scheme controller, etc are built into expandable windows, makes it easy to get to…
]] the memory usage isnt too bad, pretty average for WinAmp
]] the interface is gigantic compared to 2.9. to be fair, you do have the option to use the classic skin, but i personally think they shoulda made it a little smaller.
]] in 2.9 there was the option to change the taskbar and tray icons, yeah well say buh bye to changing the taskbar icon without ResHacking it…
on that note, to anyone considering ResHacking this thing… unless you’re going all out, dont bother… i spent half an hour at least reworking the menus to my satisfaction, but when i fired up WinAmp again, they were all back to normal with only a few things out of place. somehow it restored itself…
December 17, 2003 at 1:34 am #87233Jeff HesterKeymasterOk, I took a chance and gave Winamp 5 a spin. I downloaded the “full” free version, so I can’t rip or burn CDs, but then I already have other tools that do that quite well.
First of all, I love the “modern” skins. That’s not my term; that’s what they call it, and you can only use them if you download the full version. Lite only supports the “classic” Winamp 2 skins, which I hated.
The default skin looks great, and can be colorized to suit your mood or match your desktop:
I love it because it’s actually readable; something that’s important when you regularly run at resolutions higher than 1024×768. And when you collapse the interface, it’s much more functional, with nice big buttons for player controls.
If you’ve used Winamp 3, the drawer concept will be very familiar.
As for resource utilization, as previously mentioned by Tigerblade, Winamp 5 does a good job. Much better, in my opinion, than version 3. You can get even leaner by using the Lite version, but you’ll miss out on some cool features. If you’ve got a pretty decent computer, you’ll be fine.
It will supposedly support Winamp 2 plug-ins, including Listen-to (see my signature). I’ll test that tonight and let you know.
So far, my initial impressions lead me to think they’ve got a winner. 🙂
December 17, 2003 at 2:09 am #87238Zlink123MemberAwesome, thanks for the tip ladie_Vennom. And thanks for the uplifting review Jeff, even after using Winamp 3, I think I’ll try version 5…and it’s all because of your review 😉 . And I agree, the “modern” skins are stylin’.
December 17, 2003 at 3:04 am #87246lilmonkeyguyMemberDuz the new version support the listen-to plugin?

Yes, this version does support the listen-to plugin. I’ve been use the plugin with all the winamp betas too, and it has always worked.
For me, the modern skin just doesn’t work. Ever since the first beta. Everytime i try to load a modern skin it just crashes my winamp. I’ve tried to use the skin on both my comps and it crashes on both ( XP Pro & Home). Ive posted on thw winamp forums for help, but got no response. 🙁 Has the modern skins crashed for anyone else? I like the new winamp a lot, but i wish the darn skinz would work for me.
December 17, 2003 at 3:20 am #87244EvanMemberman 5.0 is out finally ive been wauting long enough
December 17, 2003 at 4:56 am #87232Jeff HesterKeymasterLadie_vennom, obviously the modern skin is working for me. Those screen shots above were made on my laptop. It’s a 1.5Mhz P4 running XP Pro. If you were running beta versions, maybe you’ve got some bits of buggy code hanging around.
December 17, 2003 at 5:13 am #87237SathallrinMemberI had switched to iTunes from winamp when iTunes was released because of all the features of the Music Library, Winamp 5’s music library seems to be similar with the amount of features….then you add in all the plug-ins already advailable since all the winamp 2 plug-ins work with it… It makes Winamp 5 the obvious choice for a media player for me.
December 17, 2003 at 5:24 am #87240ladie_vennomMemberWell i did do a clean uninstall and got rid of some 3rd party plugins i had and that did the job. so far the modern skin hasn’t crashed on me. *keeps fingers crossed*
December 17, 2003 at 10:59 am #87243coolguyj2Memberwinamp 5 works gr8… i gave winamp 5 beta a try and it was bad… it was crashing all the time… but this is really cool and stable like winamp 2.79… also not 2 much load on processor and memory… rockin!!!!!

I have tested a bunch of them from the winamp site, and they work great.. only thing I found that didnt work is the transparency plug-ins for winamp 2 didnt work when using the modern skin on winamp 5 (worked with classic skin).
This is fine since the modern skins for winamp 5 support their own transparency settings. -
