What is the little orange star icon located to the left of the online/offline users.
When I clicked on it brought up the users contact card. When I clicked on the star on the contact card it went away

Hi, and welcome to BBB. That orange star icon you mentioned is known as a gleam. It lets you know when a contact has posted a new blog entry, photo album, list, expo listing, etc. on Spaces.
