I’m using: Windows Live Messenger 8.1.0178.00
It just crashes randomly. I have no idea what could possibly cause it. I also have Messenger Plus! Live 4.1, I’ve tried uninstalling it, the problem kept happening. I tried re-installing WLM, it didn’t work. I really need help because not only it’s becoming bothering, it’s also becoming so wierd!
Thanks in advance,

March 6, 2007 at 2:33 am #158832PhilipModeratorHi, and welcome to BBB.
I’m sorry not to have replied earlier. Could you please supply further details, like for example, does WLM give an error message or does it simply freeze? What firewall are you using? What Startup programs are running in your taskbar? Have you done antivirus and antispyware scans?
Please take a look at post #2 here https://bigblueball.com/forums/msn-windows-live-messenger-support/38474-msn-windows-live-messenger-faq-2.html#post210280 and also https://bigblueball.com/forums/windows-live-messenger/39265-having-wlm-problems-read-first.html
Please post back if I can be of further help, and once more, my apologies.
March 6, 2007 at 11:43 am #158836BardhyliusMemberHi,
Sorry for the outburst.
Quote:does WLM give an error message or does it simply freeze? It doesn’t simply freeze. It gives an error. I get the Send/Don’t Send Error Reporting Window. Details.
Quote:What firewall are you using? Not using a firewall at all.
Quote:What Startup programs are running in your taskbar?Everything safe according to me. Details.
Quote:Have you done antivirus and antispyware scans?I haven’t done it in some time. I’m starting the scan now but I strongly doubt the error is as a result of any potential virus/spyware.
Thanks for the time and help,

Use the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility found here Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility to completely uninstall WLM. Then download a fresh copy of WLM here Windows Live Messenger Let me know how it goes.

I did what you said but still the same. 🙁
March 7, 2007 at 1:45 am #158834PhilipModeratorBardh:
This is a Registry edit. Double-check to make sure you’re in the correct branch of the Registry, because accidental mistakes (deleting the wrong key, for example) could cause havoc to your system!
Go to:
RUN
Type regedit.
Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftMSNMessengerPolicies.
Delete the Policies folder (right-click and click Delete)If you don’t have a Policies folder, go to HKCUSoftwareMicrosoftWindows LiveCommunications ClientsShared. Delete the Shared folder.
For the time being, you can log in using MSN Web Messenger And I would also suggest that you install a firewall. I use Comodo Firewall (Firewall Free Firewall Protection Best Firewall Test Firewall Software Network Security Internet Attacks Computer Personal Firewall) myself.
March 7, 2007 at 4:04 pm #158838BardhyliusMemberPhilip,
I did delete Policies and Shared folders, but still the problem keeps happening. It’s really strange. I’m downloading and installing the Comodo firewall though.
March 8, 2007 at 5:20 am #158825dreadMemberHave you ran system file checker lately? Msoert2.dll is for OE.
March 9, 2007 at 10:50 am #158839BardhyliusMemberIt’s just doesn’t seem to work. Maybe I should downgrade to the very old 7.5.

March 9, 2007 at 11:26 am #158826dreadMemberDid you run system file checker and when is the last time you have done a windows update?
March 9, 2007 at 5:00 pm #158841BardhyliusMemberI did run a system file checker. It was only available on computer restart so I wasn’t here when the computer was shut down and re-started later by my brother. But I did check the ‘Fix errors’ label and hopefully it did make any corrections. Is there any log file by the way? Last Windows update was about a week ago.
P.S. How do I delete a post in here? :/
March 9, 2007 at 9:07 pm #158827dreadMemberSounds like you ran Error-Checking. This is what I was saying to run. You can find what system file checker did in Event Viewer. Open Event Viewer and click on System and look for Windows File Protection. To see what happened with Error-Checking instead of going to System goto Application and do a search for chkdsk. At the top of Event Viewer goto View then Find and where it says Description put in chkdsk. Do not think you can delete post you have to be a mod but I am not sure never have tried it on here and do not know all the permissions they give or do not give on these forums.
March 10, 2007 at 2:24 pm #158842BardhyliusMemberI did sfc /scannow and sfc /scanboot. Event Viewer information was helpful. Problem is not solved yet.
By the way, I was refering to my posts. Of course I need admin privileges to delete someone else’s posts. 😛
