I just started using Windows Media Player and about half of my songs refuse to be added to my library. They are songs from CDs I put on my computer and are M4A file types. When I click on the file it plays from Windows Media Player. How do I change the files so they can be apart of the library?
July 14, 2006 at 2:19 am #147989SpikeMemberM4A are protected MP3 media files and can only be read by an authorized program. For example, downloading a song off iTunes is in M4A format. You cannot simply move this file and ply it wherever you want (that’s called music pircay ;)), but authorized devices and computers can play those files. That’s why you must “authorize” a computer if you want to play your bought music off iTunes on a different computer.

July 14, 2006 at 4:01 am #147990SpikeMemberIt depends where you got the files from. If you bought them, you might have to use the player provided with the service (AKA bought from iTunes Music Store use iTunes to play the music). I highly doubt you’ll be able to just ‘add’ them to your WMP library, though, they will not play unless they have been authorized to.
July 14, 2006 at 4:22 am #147998drainMemberWell they do play, but none of them were bought. They were ripped CDs.
July 14, 2006 at 4:34 am #147991SpikeMemberEr… I’m sorry, heh. I was wrong, it’s not M4A that’s protected, it’s MP4 (that iTunes uses to encrypt songs). M4a stands for the Audio layer of an MPEG-4 movie. So you could most likely convert those to MP3 Files with iTunes then import them into Windows Medis Player. That, or maybe WMP converts them automatically already, I don’t know, I use iTunes not WMP. Can’t you tell? :p
Sorry for the confusion, heh. 😮
July 14, 2006 at 9:50 pm #147996UTF-8MemberThe protected iTunes files are m4p and sometimes m4b. Doesn’t matter since windows media player won’t play it unless it has a codec for it.
July 14, 2006 at 11:35 pm #147995LinuxAddictMemberMicrosoft is allowing users who have bought songs from iTunes to download them free of charge and they are not protected. It isn’t available to the public yet because it is going to come out when Microsoft’s WiFi portable music player is released.

July 15, 2006 at 12:38 am #147992SpikeMemberThen what’s the problem?
July 15, 2006 at 2:26 am #148000drainMemberI want to add them to my library instead of trying to find the file for it.
July 15, 2006 at 3:40 am #147993SpikeMemberWhat’s the error message when you attempt to add the files to your library?
July 15, 2006 at 4:58 am #148001drainMemberThere wasn’t one. But when WMP added to my library by searching My Music folder they wouldn’t add.
July 15, 2006 at 3:49 pm #147994SpikeMemberSo go to your library and either add the folder or add all the files individually. If you add the files, you can multi-select each one in the Open dialog.
July 16, 2006 at 4:08 am #148002drainMemberI had over 900 files to add. I just deleted them all and I’m gonna add them all again…uggggh!!
