MemberI would like to restrict user access to certain programs in Windows XP so that only I can access them. The accounts I have are mine, which is the computer administrator account, and a user account which is limited. Say, for example, I want to make it so that only I can access and run Kazaa Lite, but if I simply delete it from the start menu, it deletes it from all users start menu. I know I can make the My Documents folder private, but there doesn’t seem to be a way to do this with normal program files folders. Does anyone know how I can do it? Anymore info needed so I can have a quality answer?

MemberHave a look in “C:Documents and Settings”. Everything in ‘All Users’ is shared, everything in the private maps… is… well… private. 🙂

MemberYeah I get what you mean, but, no good really, as well as Kazaa Lite, I also want to prevent the other users being able to access MSN Messenger and Yahoo Messenger, is there any way to password protect them, so that the program asks for a password when it is started up?
Or maybe I could install the programs into the private folder, rather than the default, C:Program Filesetc etc etc. Then would they be protected?May 9, 2004 at 9:00 pm #79866DJHyperbyte
MemberRather have a look at the property pages for those folders from your admin account. You can set access levels for them, so only you can access them.

MemberI’d already thought of that. I can’t because the ‘Make this folder private’ checkbox is greyed out and unchecked. And yes, I know that you need to be formatted with NTFS to have this feature, and yes, my hard drive is formatted with NTFS.

Participanti dont think its possible to completely restrict program access in XP Home… I think it can be done in Pro, but with Home I think your only option is to remove those items’ shortcuts from the “All Users” start menu folder…
but i’ll look around, cause i’ve wanted to do the same thing for some time now

MemberSorry yeah, I forgot to mention, it is XP Pro I have. And deleting the program folders from All Users also deletes it from my start menu, I’ve tried it. Doesn’t work unfortunately. I know you can get software to password protect certain folders, but its try and buy stuff, I don’t really want that.

MemberThat was my point originally. The folder ‘All Users’ contains settings for… all users (duh). If you delete something there, you will delete it for all users. This includes yourself. If you want something only for yourself, take it out of ‘All users’ and put it in your private folder.
Also, you will have to disable ‘Simple file sharing’ in XP Pro to get advanced file sharing properties. This can be done via the ‘Folder properties’, from any Explorer window.

ParticipantIN XP Home Edition, boot into Safe Mode and you will have access to NTFS file permissions.
