Ok, I have a D-Link G Wireless desktop internet card(not sure what type since the site gave no help…) and anyway, My card has a hard time recieving the signals from the router which is right upstairs. And I have tried moving the desktop around. First it was by power cords and I thought that was the problem but then I moved it to the other side of the desk(which is closer to the router) and it is a little better but still is pretty bad. Like it will say “Signal Strengh Excellent” then all of a sudden it will say: “Signal Strengh Low” and right after that usually it will disconnect. And then it will take a while for it to get to the point where it is reliable again. So does anyone know what is wrong and what I should do?? I really don’t want to go buy a new one ($60).
System Specs:
Windows XP, SP2
SBC Yahoo! DSL
Linksys G Router
Browser: Firefox, Messenger Trillian Pro/Skype/Meetro(usually running all at once.)

Other than that, there shouldn’t be a problem. May I ask what type of card it is? (PCI, PC Card, USB)
August 17, 2005 at 8:28 pm #127870MrEggsaladParticipantWell, I know that it isn’t anything in the walls since I used to have a linksys card for it and that worked just fine.(only if I still had it…). It is a PCI card(the one that you have to open your computer case to put in, sorry I don’t really know what PCI and PC card differnences are) I do know about the different brands not working well with eachother but like on my dad’s VAIO it works just fine with the built in wireless(and Sony is usually Sony-only). I really am at a loss here.
August 17, 2005 at 8:38 pm #127866SpikeMemberAre you sure about there being nothing in your ceiling (not your walls)? Also, you might try putting the PCI card ina different computer in a different location in the house, if it seems any better, then we know it’s your computer. Also, try restarting the Linksys G Router / Modem by unplugging the power cord (I have SBC DSL, too), letitng it sit for a few minutes, then plugging it back in. This will refresh the connection to SBC as well as give you a new IP address.
By the way, PCI Cards are card that look like your sound card, netowrk card, etc. PC Cards are those little notebok cards that go in laptops (sometimes called PCMCIA?), and USB is, well, USB. 🙂
August 17, 2005 at 8:50 pm #127871MrEggsaladParticipantWell, I have tried that too. No luck. Well I didn’t restart it excatly..I had it(router, and internet) off and unplugged for at least a day a little while ago(maybe a week ago) because I had a tree getting trimmed but that would have been the same as restarting it and given the same results as doing what you said. As far as putting it in a new computer that would be quite difficult seeing as I don’t have the drivers anymore and I have no idea which ones I downloaded :/ Also it is in a MSI K8M Neo V so it should work just fine..as that is a good mother board. Thanks for repling by the way!
(And yes it is a PCI card, thanks for teaching me about that. 😛 )
August 17, 2005 at 10:08 pm #127863DavidParticipantHave you tried using a different channel for wireless communications? Default is likely 6, try changing it to 2 or 10 and see if the signal increases.
August 18, 2005 at 2:14 am #127872MrEggsaladParticipantI don’t think my hardware supports channels(the piece of crap!). I looked all over everything realated to the card(properties, configuring the card…etc.) and couldn’t find anything about channels. I even used the Windows Help(Which needs help) and couldn’t find anything(no surprise though). Maybe it doesn’t support channels, that’s what my dad says. Could you tell me where to find options on channels?
August 18, 2005 at 6:40 am #127867SpikeMemberAnother suggestion: See if you can get your hands on a different wireless device, and see if the signal strength is any better using that one instead of your PCI card. If this is the case, then your PCI Card might be damaged or malfunctioning.
August 18, 2005 at 6:50 am #127864DavidParticipantThe channel is set in the Access Point, not the wireless card.
August 18, 2005 at 1:17 pm #127873MrEggsaladParticipantSpike: I have a PSP and search the web just fine(gets signal perfectly, even in the basement!) on that. My dad uses a Sony VAIO (kinda old one) and that works just great. When my laptop used to hold charge it worked just fine. Since nothing I found here worked, maybe it is damaged or malfunctioning, also since everything else I have has a stronger signal.
David: Since all my other things are working right I highly doubt it is a problem with channels. If they wern’t then wouldn’t my other things have less of a signal too?
August 18, 2005 at 5:42 pm #127868SpikeMemberMy advice for you now is that your PCI Wireless card is probably either damaged or malfunctioning. If you are able to, try putting it in a different PCI slot in your computer and see if that helps the issue at hand.
August 18, 2005 at 6:42 pm #127874MrEggsaladParticipantOk, I did that and right at first it couldn’t connect at all. Then it only went up to “Very Good” verses the original “Excellent”. It still will disconnect every now and then though…my card must be defective. Well at least now I know that it is a problem with the card itself.:(
Thanks for all your help. If you have any more suggestions I would be happy to hear them.August 18, 2005 at 6:55 pm #127869SpikeMemberWell…after all your trouble, the least I can do for you is recommend a new card. Here are my suggestions:
LINKSYS WMP54G PCI Wireless Adapter
NETGEAR WG311 PCI Wireless Adapter
MOTOROLA WPCI810G PCI Wireless AdapterOr if you’d rather find one yourself, I got these from this list. Hope all works out!
August 18, 2005 at 7:03 pm #127875MrEggsaladParticipantThanks so much! That Linksys that you recommended was the one I used to have!! And it is cheeper than what I thought I would have to pay($60-70)! Thank you, thank you, thank you! I’m surprised it is still on the market. Well thanks so much for finding it. And thanks for thinking of more and more things to try. I guess somethings are just broken… Well thanks again for finding the card. Hopefully that will work.
