MemberFinally, A solution!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have been experiencing the constant disconnects 10 minutes after putting up the away message. I have had the router for about a month and it would do it on the remote computer all of the time. Yesterday while on AIM I received the mesage that a newer version of AIM is available and if I would like to download it. I did, installed it and Voila, NO MORE Disconnects!!! I couldn’t believe it. I left the away message on all night and it was still up this morning!! I have a feeling that the AIM developers were well aware of this problem (probably monitor this forum) and quietly fixed it without blatantly announcing that it was their problem and not that of the router. Hopefully this will be the fix for many others that have been driven “up the wall” by this.August 23, 2004 at 9:02 pm #39382Tropical
MemberNot to be rude or anything but you have no idea what your talking about. I have a friend who has downloaded every version in the book and nothing fixed her disconnects. It has something to do with ports because when she switches her ports some take longer for her to disconnect.
So far the best solution for this problem is:
Host: login.oscar.aol.com
Port: 21August 24, 2004 at 1:50 am #39380dickman
MemberNot to be rude or anything but I’m sure I know a bit more then you. (TCP/IP software developer for a major software development house for last 8 years.) I’m sure you know all about ports and orrifices! Loading down the new version worked for me. I did see that other folks still had problems with the new version but also may have other variables thrown into the fray complicating matters. Simply stated that it worked for me.

MemberI loaded the new version of AIM as well as the Beta version, and it still didn’t work…
Any other ideas? I’m hopeless 🙁

Participantto fix that problem that was happening to me, everytime I signed onto aim I had to reset my router (hold a pin or paper clip point into the reset button for about 20 seconds) and then my aim stayed connected for 24 hours. after 24 hours is up you need to reset the router again (if you’re someone who likes to stay on all the time). if you sign on and off then you need to reset your router everytime you sign on.
this only works if your router is at your computer, not the other computer(s) in the house.
i really fixed this router when I sent my router back (because it was defective) and got a new one (the same kind).
this may be the answer to your problem so try it out.

MemberI am definately a novice when it comes to using AIM but believe that the underlying instant messaging technology that each (IM) service uses is proprietary (unique to that provider) and not “open” standard. That means that AIM’s implementation vs. IBM’s or Microsoft’s Messanger is probably different. It would be interesting to see if the problems exist there with wireless routers as well. I must have just gotten lucky with my problem being fixed by a new version of AIM but that tells me that obviously a change in the AIM product, new code etcs changed the condition to no longer occur with my computer. It could be a timing problem, lost TCP information packets, any number of things. Since AIM is a free service as opposed to a product that you pay for, the developers do not have the incentive or motivation to fix this problem, although I am sure they are aware of it. Seems that there should still be some means of submitting a requirement to AOL for this to be fixed. My past experience with debugging mainframe software problems has taught me that even problems that appear to be hardware, in this case the wireless router can often be fixed on the software side, ie. dropped information bits over the wireless connection causing a timeout situation with AIM might be fixed by having the AIM software redrive the data request to keep the connection active, etc. There could be any number of possibilities. The fact that so many users are experiencing this problem and the fact that it is a solid, recreatable situation means that this could defiantely be quickly remedied if the right people looked at the problem. Trying different ports, etc is simply a band-aid approach which does not address the true underlying problem or bug! Just my $.02.

MemberLmao. a new AIM version won’t fix the problem man..
I’ve been using AIM for since I was 9 years old (im 15 now). I know basically everything about it.
Port numbers fixed this problem for many people.. Most people it was 21 that fixed it. 5190 is the default port and most unstable and carefree port. Wireless routers can also be a cause for this. In which case like alana said you may need to reset your router every 24 hours. I have a D-Link DI-514 Wireless Router which I use as a wired router now. When I used it as a wireless router with my Wireless USB Adapter it would disconnect me when I downloaded songs or large files.. Other than that it never disconnected me from AIM.. This disconnecting thing is not just because of one cause.. A lot of it may be but not all of it. Especially if some people find different solutions.

MemberOk, I tried downloading a new version. I tried using an old version. I tried port 21, port 4000, port everything. I reset my router. I’ve done everything and nothing works. It’s getting really frigging annoying. Seriously, no one knows? Even AOL lags. I don’t have any other messengers, nor do I ever plan on having any others. Please help!

MemberI FIXED IT!
I guess with the Linksys router, you have to open the ports yourself. I don’t really know how to explain this, but if you have a linksys router, you can go to their website, and then to “Support” “Technical Support” and then to the Knowledge Database. From there, type in “How to open ports”, and it will give you an example for opening the ports you need.
I searched the AIM website, and the ports are: 1024-5000.
After I did this and restarted my computer, it was fixed! I’ve been on AIM now for an hour with no problem. Before, I would be on AIM for 2 minutes and I’d get signed off.
I hope I helped anyone who can’t seem to fix it!
