hi,
i´m wondering why WLM doesnt run on windows 2000. i cant imagine that microsoft couldnt have made it compatible to this operating system. i think they don´t want to. they want to force everybody to buy and install xp.
i´m still using windows 2000 because it meets all my needs and i dont see the necesarity to install windows xp exept of the WLM compatibility. i mean thats incredible! i have to install xp only to be able to use the new messenger!
is there a crack to use it with win2k?
thanks
tuffi
February 16, 2006 at 1:06 am #138423MrEggsaladParticipantNo cracks, no nothing. Win2k is VERY OLD. Am I saying it’s bad? No. I’m just saying it’s old, and well soon Windows Vista is comming out. I see no reason to stay on Win2k when XP is pretty stable and is the standard today.
February 16, 2006 at 10:36 am #138425tuff.enuffMemberok, you´re right – it´s very old. but it would be technically possible to develop an instant messenger with the same features that WLM has and windows 2000 compatibility.
the “engine” of xp istn´t very different to the engine of 2k. 99% of the programs that run on XP are also compatible to 2k.
the latest versions of the other instant messenger don´t require xp. and its clear why. neither google, nor yahoo, nor aol, nor icq have any benifit when people go buying xp. but m$ has! so they put the people off the old versions of their products until they surrender and buy the newest version.February 16, 2006 at 6:41 pm #138422narayananMembertuff.enuff am looking for a Win 2k too. As Eggsalad said, Microsoft as such might not produce a Win 2k compatible Live messenger. I would wait for one of the clients like Trillian, Amsn to become compatible with the Live Messenger protocol, and my guesses it would’nt be out until Live Messenger gets out of BETA.
February 16, 2006 at 11:22 pm #138424MrEggsaladParticipantWell, they already are able to communicate with the Live Messenger Protocal. Since it’s really the same protocal, just being changed. I mean, obviously there will come a time where Trillian updates to the new changed one, but for now, they really aren’t THAT much different. However, I still doubt Microsoft will make a Win2k version, like I said, Win2k is old, and pretty much outdated. XP is nice, and Vista is comming soon. They can’t support Win2k forever, eventually you will have to upgrade. That’s just how computers are.
April 22, 2006 at 11:06 pm #138426The_XamazingMembercouldn’t someone just edit the install package and make it compatible with win2K? Someone edited the 7.5 install package and that’s how I got 7.5 for win2K.
April 23, 2006 at 5:08 am #138421shifterMemberI haven’t come across a patched installer for win2k similar to the one there was for v7.5, but here is a bit of info on how to attempt the patch on your own, likely will not work, but if you’re desperate to try anything have at it.

They are wanting everyone to jump ship, pay lots and lots of money to upgrade your hardware and buy their operating system.. vista!! yes!! that’s it. Microsoft = monoply? nahh.. no way.

Or maybe newer Operating Systems have things that older ones don’t? What the hell is the point in making new software and new OS software if it works on all the old stuff? When *is* the right time to start taking advantage of new API and libraries? When it’s been default for 10 years?
It’s a 6 year old Operaying System, give the Mircosoft bashing a rest.
April 24, 2006 at 5:29 am #138418detn8rParticipantWhy is upgrading a necessity when there is no need to? I think people with enough intelligence need to know that Microsoft is running a monopoly show. Sure, obviously there is nothing wrong with upgrading operating systems api’s libraries and whatever else coding shtuff they plugin, but as long as MS continues to generate updates for 2000, there isn’t a need to upgrade if you don’t want to. And to make software upgrades only to get you to upgrade to buy their operating system is ridiculous. Rest on Microsoft bashing? pfft.. never.
