Ok – so I’ve (Ryan) updated my computer so it’s now running Vista. Very slick, indeed! So far, everything runs as it did when I had XP, except for my WLM Plus voice which is so choppy I can hardly understand the person on the other end of my headphones. And you all know I enjoy the WoW which puts an additional drain on the system; which didn’t seem to bother anything in XP, but here I still have the choppy voice problem.
Any ideas? I know lots of you have been helpful and understanding in this whole process, but the voice thing . . . well, it’s gotta be better than this!

When you check Tools / Options / Connections…..does it show you’re on a uPnP connection or a non-uPnP. Vista has this blocked automatically and it made a dramatic difference in the performance on voice and cam on mine when I realized it and enabled it. Here’s a link on how to get it enabled in Vista if you haven’t already.

As with everything Vista they call it by a different name now….Network Discovery…but it’s what you’re after I think. If you already have it enabled let me know…I’ll ponder it some more as well. I’d like to know if it fixes your problem.
Good luck!
DorisAugust 11, 2007 at 1:07 am #163292PhilipModeratorWell, I tested Vista Ultimate on a spare hard disk, and I must say that I was quite impressed with it. I couldn’t run the Aero interface because my graphics wasn’t powerful enough, but I can live with that. Just make sure to have a minimum of 2GB of RAM, especially if you want to play games like WoW, Heather.
Just follow patndoris’ tip about the universal Plug and Play thingy, and see whether it improves your voice calls. If not, please post back and I’ll try to help.

If anyone should need add’l info on how we got it to work just PM me.

August 11, 2007 at 3:22 pm #163290PolarBearNPRParticipantOMG – what a savior Doris was! And patient beyond belief! I can’t say enough wonderful things about her and her abilities and her patience . . . I’m beside myself . . . and oh so thankful!
Yes indeed we went through everything painstaking step by painstaking step and it worked! Even the cam worked! *jumps for joy*
Thank you just doesn’t seem enough to convey my gratitude, but, Doris – you so rock!
And Philip – thank you for your understanding of what I use my computer for 😉
August 11, 2007 at 4:33 pm #163296Doris KenneyParticipantWow! Careful guys or my head’s gonna swell up & explode! Thanks for the praise Heather, but it’s not necessary. You’re certainly more than welcome for the assistance. Any time I can help I’m glad to.
I’m just glad we got you all fixed! Sometimes tweaks hide in the strangest of places no? And btw, the firewall on the router should be sufficient – I wouldn’t worry about putting one on the Vista machine any time soon. I’ve been running my machines non-stop since March this way and have had absoloutely zero problems. But for anyone reading this – DON’T disable firewalls on your machine unless your router has one – you don’t want to be left unprotected.
Now…what do I have to do to get one of those little “Staff” icons next to my name? LOL!

August 12, 2007 at 3:11 am #163291PolarBearNPRParticipantWell . . . had some trouble with the voice tonight . . . just like it was before we fixed it 🙁 My husband installed the sound something on the motherboard (just a software switch) and it improved, but I can’t play warcraft and voice at the same time or it has that annoying breaking up quality.
Does Vista take lots of memory? or computer resources or something? Everything (WoW, WLM, YIM, voice chat, email and internet) ran happily together in xp.
Any ideas?
Hmm – just re-read the advice, and I only have 1.5 GB of RAM.
