Some accounts with invalid characters in the first name of the user’s profile are currently experiencing errors/failure when signing into Windows Live Messenger. While they don’t yet have a permanent fix, if you receive this error you can try the steps below as a temporary fix:
Change the first name in the user’s profile
1. Go to http://account.live.com/
2. Sign in with the account in question
3. Click ‘Registered information’ link
4. Click the ‘Change’ link next to your name
5. Change the First name to something appropriate with no special characters or the ‘&’ symbol.
6. Click ‘Save’
7. Attempt to Sign in with the application that was creating the error.March 17, 2010 at 1:29 pm #176768Jeff HesterKeymasterThanks for the post, Doris!
Out of curiosity, what are considered “invalid characters?”

Letters and numbers seem to be fine. At least it didn’t yell at me when I tried a combination of both. However, it did not like any punctuation or special characters such as * or &.
I’d probably tell any user being affected by this to use letters and/or numbers only for the moment. Remember, this is not the screen name/login – it the first name as shown in the user’s profile.
It looks like they are working on a fix so if anyone is really attached to their special characters in their first name field they’ll likely be able to change it back at some point in the future.
