Memberok… I have a problem. Note: this problem is at school… so it will take me a while to try all of your ideas and then get back to u
I’m trying to add a windows xp computer to a windows xp workgroup… but its not working. I keep getting an error that says that I may not be authorized and to contact the administrator of the workgroup… how do I authorize this computer?
to tell u the truth… I don’t think this is the real problem. btw, they r using xp home (cuz they were donated :p)

ParticipantIn Windows XP you can ‘add’ a computer to a domain, this will authorize the computer and make it a member in the domain, where it will be controlled via the domain controller. When you ‘specify’ a workgroup you are just using a common ID for a group of computers to talk to each other.
If the computer is a member of a domain (which it is not if you are running XP home), then it will not be resitricted by the controller.
If the computer is standalone, then it will be restricted only by the administrative accounts and policies local to that computer. Make sure the account you are trying to change the workgroup name on is a full administrator account. Try logging in as ‘Administrator’ in safe mode (press F8 before the boot logo) if a standard account does not work.

Memberok, here is an update…
the computer that I’m trying to connect to the workgroup is xp PRO. everything else is xp HOME… is there more things I need to do?also… the account I use has administrative privilages, but I tried to log in as safe mode anyway. there was an account called “administrator” that wasn’t there b4, so I logged in on that account. then everything was there, but when I was telling the tech team… the screensaver started, and when I moved the mouse, everything was gone! I tried “view”->”refresh”, but no luck… any ideas?

ParticipantPlease be more clear on everything you are doing, none of the above appears to apply to what you are doing.
You need to go to start > control panel > system > computer name and configure the name here. There is no view->refresh on this dialog.

Memberoic, I had already changed the workgroup to what it is supposed to be, I just can’t see anybody, thats my problem.
also, I was in “my network places”, I was trying to see what computers I could see after I changed the workgroup.March 10, 2007 at 3:37 am #158927David
ParticipantThere is no real need for workgroups, you can access any computer with \IP_AddressShare or \Computer_NameShare. Whether or not it shows in “My Network Places” by default is unimportant. You should not be at all limited.

Memberok… I understand now.
I’m still having problems though… I get an “does not exist” error, but I know it does exist. also… I try to access the computer I’m at through this process, but I get that same error still, but only when I use the ip address. I can use the computer name, and I get it fine.
another weird thing is that it works… but only in safe mode.March 17, 2007 at 1:55 am #158928David
ParticipantAre the computers on the same IP subnet?

Memberwell the netbios info that makes my network places work is at a broad cast level only to guarantee it to always show you need something called a wins server other wise it’s based on whether the information that is broadcasted is seen by that comp so run all the computers at once open my network places on them at roughly the same time (it helps to run the networking wizard) andd then come bac in an hour
also running a linux server with samba can cause some prblems in this regard as well -
