I’m not quite sure what you are talking about, but I have this really cool thing on my website from Sonork.
(http://www.mizzou.edu/~njseef/ is my homepage, and the sonork application is @ http://www.mizzou.edu/~njseef/sonork.htm )
It is a simple html insertion, and you can instantly send me a message upon visiting my website. I get the message as if it were someone IMing me! Its really cool! 🙂
Actually, we have this type of functionality already on the site for AIM, ICQ and Yahoo (MSN doesn’t support it). The question I was posing was whether there was any interest in setting up our own, BigBlueBall IM network, which could be used for group chat as well as member-to-member instant messaging.
My gut feeling is that this might not be too popular (one more client syndrome), unless that client could offer connectivity to the other IM networks (MSN, AIM, Yahoo, ICQ). We could do it simply with an IRC channel (well-supported by Trillian), or with a few other products. I’m looking for a no-cost solution, if at all possible. 😉
Hi again, Jeff!
Well, I see your point about the “one more client syndrome” and agree, or would — except perhaps in the case of SRK. Folks might just find it worth their while to have an alternative, secure, private comms channel – many do. Then again, others do not – I guess it is a matter of personal tastes, needs, and priorities.
But then once again, perhaps when gim gets up to speed (ETA: 2-3 weeks) that may be a more interesting option – it does offer interoperability that works, tho (we can discuss more detail, if you want, separately), plus other things that may also be useful for a site-based IM app.
Anyway, just some ideers… :o)
