The compassion of humanity…but honestly what can you expect in a videogame? Most likely old to those who play WOW and spend their lives on the internet but here goes anyway:
Quote:World of Warcraft or otherwise known as simply, WoW is one of the most popular and successful computer games in history. It is a Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game that 6 million people pay $10 -15 per month to play. This type of popularity creates a sample size that is large enough to reflect the forces that control it. In Layman’s terms, with this many people playing this online game at any given time human nature tends to get a stronger representation. The first “reality” check was a bug that caused a plague to outbreak and affect people’s characters in certain cases instantly killing any player below a certain level.
The second “reality” check was when this group of Warcraft players otherwise known as a guild interrupted a memorial service. Apparently, some dude dies in real life who is a popular WoW player. The people in the game think it would be nice to have a memorial for the player so they log into his account, take the character to a lake, and set it up for everyone to come pay their respects.
A bunch of dudes decide this would be a great time to ambush everyone so they run over a hill, kill the dead guy’s character, and then wipe out everyone who was there to show their respects. They filmed the whole thing and put it on the net for everyone to see.
April 4, 2006 at 7:50 pm #141810Tea GrannyMemberI’m not sure which is creeping me out more – having a funeral for a real person in a game, or that others used it as an excuse to ambush? I don’t do PC games so I enjoyed your post. Thanks!
April 4, 2006 at 7:53 pm #141802Jeff HesterKeymasterOh and I tried to edit but had a problem. Just to add this:
The video does contain foul language for those sensitive to such things, but then again anybody willing to watch this probably isn’t that sensitive to begin with. haha
April 4, 2006 at 8:44 pm #141809MrEggsaladParticipantHeh, I can’t believe that people will go that far. I mean…it’s a game. Nothing more, maybe this is why I can’t seem to get caught up in that, I like to keep a fine line between internet and life.
April 5, 2006 at 6:43 am #141807RabidKittenParticipantOoooh no, it’s NOT just a game. IT’S AN MMORPG!!!!! <–note the un-sami-like overuse of exclamation marks.
MMORPGs are more than just games. I assure you. Believe me *rubs her head* My mother first became adicted to evercrack…erm everquest. Then my brother. My older brother. Once they quit, Nate picked up WoW. It is more than a game. Ohh for sure.
Not to mention that people do get to know eachother. It’s no different to them than if we found out that, say I died and you all decided to hold a ‘memorial’ forum thread. *shrug* Hell, you have any idea how many people date over mmorpgs and then get married? It’s nuts.
So really, it was very disrespectful. Imagine if someone here died. You wouldn’t want some lame ass flamer or troll messing up the memorial thread, would you?
April 5, 2006 at 11:34 am #141804AnnaParticipantThe plague caused 200 damage every second for 3 seconds, but you could become immune by just /pvp flagging yourself. It only became such a huge issue because there were level 60’s (who had enough HP to withstand 200dmg for 3 seconds) who were intentionally running around, spreading it to lowbies.
April 5, 2006 at 12:27 pm #141803Jeff HesterKeymasterIf I’m not mistaken, they could have prevented had they not chosen a pvp game correct? According to a friend of mine that plays this “they set it up in winterspring, a contested territory with a 50/50 population, announced it on the forums” Considering it’s a contested areay what else can you expect from others?Honestly if you’re going to do an online funeral service it should be more well thought out. I’m not saying what they did was right, or wrong even. Personally…and notice I said personally…if that funeral were for myself, and I saw that attack…I’d laugh. A video game is a video game and I understand WOW can get more personal but I still think they should have thought about this beforehand. Heck doing it on forums would have been taken more seriously.
Strange to think that now that person’s memory has been sort of immortalized in the WOW community. Whether that’s a good thing or bad is up for debate.
April 5, 2006 at 1:23 pm #141806OreoMemberThat’s why I LOVE EQ2…more respect…at least until they opened PvP and the WoW people flooded in…though some of them are REALLY awesome…we got some scum like the ones who did that. *The voice of an EQ2 addict* YES I’m addicted…and married to an addict as well. 🙂
April 6, 2006 at 2:29 am #141805AnnaParticipantContinuing what MiamiGuy said…
It was a terrible idea to hold the ceremony in not only a contested area, but one so far from a major city with such a high horde:alliance ratio. They should’ve seen it coming a mile away.
There’s also the fact that many of them probably didn’t actually know it was a funeral, and hadn’t read the forums. They just joined the guild raid, assuming it was just any other typical raid group going for some HKs.
April 6, 2006 at 5:56 am #141808RabidKittenParticipantIt was very naive of them to think they wouldn’t be disturbed *shrug* And I sure as hell don’t know enough about WoW to really say much of anything. Heh, my brother on the other hand… …
But yeah, it was a futile attempt.
… … but you gotta admit, the music they used was funny.
