KeymasterWhen you say “write your own bot” are you talking about creating your own software, or just defining the bot’s personality and behaviors? There’s a great IRC bot program already available from TimberFrog.com that’s based on the A.L.I.C.E. technology (two-time champion of the Turing Test Loebner Competition).
I’ve used it myself, and it works quite well. It can be as entertaining, useful or annoying as you want.

No truer words have been spoken. Bots can be hilarious, but most of them teeter on the annoying side.
I don’t know anyone who has coded their own bot software–probably due to the fact that, like Jeff said, there is already software to use/start from. Fifteen years ago it would have been worth it to code your own, now I think it’s a moot point.

You forgot the most popular way of ‘writing bots’. Scripts!
Most IRC clients, like BitchX and mIRC have a built-in scripting language (similar to ircII’s) which you could use to write a complete bot from scratch.
Most bots actually, are just programs or IRC clients that are running a script. Although you could call this “defining the bot’s personality and behaviors”, it’s really not a very good description. A lot of bots are scripts coded by individuals, or scripts available to the public from script websites.

MemberAlong with client scipts and eggdrops, many people write bots in full fledged programming languages like C, C++, and Perl (Perl!!!). Although this is much[/b] harder, if you have the ability you can make bots that will whoop the pants off of any client based bot.
