MemberI fell for this even after seeing and hearing all the alarm bells. I even entered my ID and password in the fake login page on the geocities site. After I did that, some crud page opened and I realised my mistake.
Luckily, I went immediately to my yahoo account and changed my password and logged out. I then logged in and changed it again to be sure. 🙂
(I also deleted all my yahoo archives as someone suggested it might help because there might be something in there.)
If I hadnt of moved fast, I would have lost my ID. whew!

MemberWow! I am so glad that I found this forum. The same exact thing happened to me last Saturday night. I was on Yahoo Messenger, and got the same type of message, with a link to a fraudulent Geocities page. The page was not accessible, and I thought nothing of it.
Fortunately, I was able to gain sole control of my account. The person who hijacked it did not change the password, but instead deleted the contents of my Inbox and all of my mail folders, and sent out Instant Messages from my account.
Needless to say, this was a learning experience.

MemberThe same exact thing happened to me only it was a different url link but still a Geocities link.
Did anyone come up with any solutions on how to expose this problem and also retrieve the new password?

MemberSame exact problem occurred to me last night, only the Geocities link was different.
Did anyone come up with resolutions, primarily how to fix the problem and regain account access?

MemberA solution? The solution is DO NOT CLICK ON LINKS!!! LOL But seriously, everyone before you ever put in your user name and password, Check out the address at the top of your browser. YOU MUST see the yahoo name in that address. I never log into anything that may say “geocities.com/yahoo/login.html”, or even using any other free web site like “freewebs/yahoo.login.html”. The only page I use to log in is http://www.yahoo.com. At least then I know for sure where I am, and when I click on log in, I am sure of where I’m going.

ParticipantMost New phishing links are coming from @btinternet .com names on my side.
These fake login sites are no longer using geocities but using low cost hosting and free “make ur own url” redirects.
follow these simple guidelines and you will be ok.
Only geocities site you will ever have to login to will be..
You will NEVER have to login to a subdomained geocities site like below.
http://www.geocities/gimmeurid/
Yahoo does NOT use dash ( – ) characters in their login urls like below.
http://login-yahoo.aw
http://violaions-yahoo.com
http://termination-yahoo.comReal yahoo login sites will look like the following.
http://login.yahoo.com
http://edit.yahoo.com
http://edit.europe.yahoo.com
http://edit.my.yahoo.com
http://mail.yahoo.com
http://edit.in.yahoo.com
http://edit.tpe.yahoo.comYahoo! japan have their own chat servers and logins that only take japanese id’s
http://login.yahoo.co.jp
http://edit.yahoo.co.jpNOTE no ( – ) in the official yahoo login pages.
NEVER login to any yahoo login page with popups or a banner ad down the side…official yahoo login pages don’t have these. (these can be blocked tho)
NEVER click links of some stranger that pms you.
If you get a unexpected url from a buddy list member that does not usually pm you with link be very cautious and follow the above guidelines as it wont hurt if you dont look at the url and a true friend would not force you to.
If you get a pm about yahoo! terminating or deleting accounts do not respond to these as they are all a farce as yahoo! will NEVER tell you in pm that your account is been deleted or any other account actions in pm as Yahoo! has their own warning system built into yahoo! messenger that does not use pm’s.
If you do notice that a friends id has been stolen and used to post these malicious url’s about be sure to inform your other buddies before they fall victim to this malicious act and it starts all over again.
Follow these and you should be ok.
Hope they help.
