MemberHey, look at me, I’m asking a question. Lol. Anyways, I was just wondering if any of you guys have used yahoo IM on Linux, and if so, have you ever been booted, or had an attempted booting. I was just wondering because I’m starting to work with Linux more, and since I’m going to be using Linux more and more and getting away from Windows as much as I can. I’m hoping that someone can tell me if Linux handles booters differently from Windows, or if I’ll have to try and write some kind of program to cut down on booting. I was also wondering if there are any third party chat clients for Linux that have anti-boot features. I’ve looked at a lot of them and none of them mention anything about boot protection, so I’m wondering if they are boot proof due to Linux maybe handling boots differently. I would try and find out for myself, but I go out of my way to find booters to continue to test Y!mLites boot proofness, but, I rarely ever find a booter. Btw, I use Mandrake 9.1 and I usually use GAIM to chat on yahoo. Any info much appreciated. ^_^

Memberit mainly depends on any vulnerabilities in the program you use. and because not many people use linux, there are probably little to no boot codes that will crash it. if I were you I wouldnt be worried about being booted. its probably unlikely that there is a “universal boot code” that will crash any client on any os. its like with aim, theres been alot of vulnerabilities that have been exploited to crash aim. but these same vulnerabilities probably dont exist in gaim or other clients.

MemberYahoo! Messenger (Windows) is mainly bootable because of the way it works. It renders text with an IE control and has to do mass checking and blocking of normal HTML/JavaScript/Java etc… that could be potentially embedded into IMs and chat. People work out codes that cause these checks, or IE vulnerabilities to overflow etc…
Yahoo! Messenger (Linux) and clients do not use these IE controls so most of the problems are already gone. A client might introduce new problems, such as its parsing of tags may allow for buffer overflows etc…, but thats dependent on client. Things like Multiple IMs and Voice conference Invities, webcam invites etc… are usually stripped by clients. Yahoo! Messenger (Linux) doesn’t have webcam for you to be invited to?
Yahoo! Messener (Linux) has no chat room capability, that is coming in the 1.2 series. Zinc is a nice console based chat client, you can see more about the chat clients at http://www.carbonize.co.uk
