ParticipantWeb portal Yahoo will begin offering “virtually unlimited storage” for its paid e-mail customers and will upgrade free users to 100MB, an executive said Thursday.
Quote:quote:The upgrade is part of an overall enhancement for Yahoo Mail that will launch this summer. Besides additional storage, the service will get a face-lift and tie in more Yahoo-branded services, such as Photos and Messenger. The announcement comes a month after search rival Google said it would launch a free e-mail service called Gmail that offers 1GB of storage, considerably more space than free versions of Yahoo Mail and Microsoft’s Hotmail. Yahoo currently offers 4MB of storage to free users of its e-mail service.
The company’s decision to boost its e-mail storage is not surprising. A day before Gmail details were unveiled, Yahoo sent e-mails to some customers in hopes of gauging their interest in receiving 100MB of storage.
The company said the e-mail was just a typical consumer survey for its “loyal consumer base” and denied that it had any relation to the news of Gmail.
Gmail has sparked considerable controversy, because Google plans to scan people’s e-mails to serve ads based on message text. The plans have drawn fire from privacy advocates and industry leaders alike.
Details of Yahoo’s storage upgrade were revealed by Jim Brock, the company’s senior vice president of communication and consumer services, during Yahoo’s presentation to Wall Street analysts.
“The objective here is to make storage quotas irrelevant to users,” Brock said.
The competition between Yahoo and Google continues to heighten. In February, Yahoo dropped Google as its algorithmic search provider and instead launched its own technology. The companies also compete over distribution deals, as evidenced in Yahoo replacing Google search on CNN.com this week.

Just even more great news for Yahoo! Mail users. I’m one of the Yahoo mail users with a 6MB inbox limit, but upgrading to 100 will be awesome – especially sending attachments.
As I can see, there is no set date, but apparently this service will be released some time in the summer, along with an interface uplift. How does this affect you? What are your views/comments?

Participantmaiximum message size? I don’t understand what you mean. As in composing, or inbox limit? The inbox limit is 4MB, or 6MB if you signed up last year.

MemberYah, I could read the maximum inbox size in your article Detn8r. I’m not that big of a dumbass. 😉 I meant what I said, maximum message size. As in when you “compose” a message, what is the maximum size yahoo will accept with it’s new 100MB limit. For example: Gmail allows 1GB of inbox space, and 10MB maximum message size. Clear enough?

Don’t be cheaky! 😎 There is still many unanswered questions, but I would probably guess around 3-5.

ParticipantWell, she seemed to have upgraded today. The new design looks awesome, and the new limit is very pleasing.

MemberYeah, just logged on to check my mails, the maximum message size, if you mean what I think you mean, is 10MB. I think. But 100MB of space it is, excellent stuff from Yahoo. Still free 🙂

KeymasterIts awsome. I don’t think I would change my well known email address to get 1GB space instead of 100MB, because I am never going to exceed 100MB.
I saw the increased space and new look right from the morning today, but yahoo email was working slow because of the upgrade for the whole day. Its back to normal now with increased space 😎

I wouldn’t bother if I were you.
Besides, I’m actually waiting for them to change MSN Messenger’s entire design to something great.

Participantmaybe its just me, but I liked the old look better than this new interface… but I love the 100 megs though

ParticipantI love the new gui. Most people said they hated hotmail’s new look, but it just took them a few weeks to get used to it. You’ll won’t even remember what the old one looked like in a couple of days :D.

MemberThis is retarded. SBC Yahoo! DSL is my ISP and only the main SBC Yahoo! Account (my parents) gets the “unlimited” space, which is 2GB. Any SBC Yahoo! Sub accounts (mine) only get upgraded to 100 MB. 😡
