I’ve looked through the boards to try and find an answer to this, so if its been posted before I’m sorry…
I noticed that when I chat to some friends on YIM and they are ‘invisible’ I can’t see their display pics.
Yet, if I delete them and then ‘allow’ them to send a message, I can see their pics regardless of whether they have ‘share’ or ‘do not share’ enabled and they are still invisible.
I’ve tried this using both of my yahoo accounts – I also noticed that when I signed out of one account and i.m’d it with the other, the picture box was blank (not sure if this is a sure fire way of knowing someone is offline or what, but I could only view profile).
Therefore, why does this happen and if its not happening to anyone else am I missing some file in Yahoo?

I’ve had some trouble with pictures of my contacts showing in text chat. Sometimes it shows and sometimes not, even when they are online, with share display pic enabled, and I can see it on my contact list – it still won’t appear in text chat.
I’m guessing it’s more related to Yahoo than some mysterious missing file. You can hit F5 to refresh your messenger contact list and if you see a picture (or the yellow smilie) you’ll know they are online. Other than that, dunno bout a sure fire way….that’s exactly what invisible is for.
I know it doesn’t answer your basic question, but I doubt anything is wrong with your YIM. I’d guess it’s just a quirk for the moment.

Hi Doris – they like me always appear offline, so their icons are grey smilies on my friends list. Thats why I did my own test with my two accounts (using a patch for Yahoo). Its a case of add ’em and I cant see their pics (cause they always offline – like me) or delete ’em (then they don’t appear in my friends list), but I can see pics… oh choices, choices lol.

XEEBER – Detect Invisible Users on Yahoo! Messenger uses a similar method to retrieving the persons display pic
yahoo tried to block most connections
msn unlike yahoo lets you block all communication in contact updates where yahoo do not.
Here is my two cents:
Sometimes the display image request is sent sometimes it is not, it is unfortunately as simple as that.
Xeeber can display the pic, but it also puts their text across it which I find rather annoying.
I just made a program that lets you download the display pic, so you can view it and save it if you want.
