I was talking to my girlfriend through Yahoo! Messenger 8.1 with Voice, both of us on our headsets. She requested that I send her a photo of my nephew’s newborn twins. I opened up my Hotmail account and forwarded the email to her. The email contained only ONE .jpg image. She does not use Outlook or Outlook Express, she goes to Yahoo.com and gets her mail online. She downloaded the photo and clicked on ‘open’ (not save) and the image opened in Windows Picture and Fax viewer. Then she clicked on the ‘next image’ button at the bottom of the viewer window. She could see MY Temporary Internet files, .jpgs, .gifs, and .bmps. She saw hundreds of images, including buttons and banners from different sites. I think she even saw a photo of the bracelet that I bought on eBay for her for Christmas.
As soon as I dumped my cache, she could no longer view the files. I called Yahoo! support and ended up talking to a manager. He bumped the issue to a Level 2 support rating and told me to remove IE7, which I did. He also said to call Microsoft, but I just got the run-around from them.I also have an account with Yahoo!, but I use Outlook for that account. I forwarded the same email from my Hotmail account to my Yahoo! SBCglobal account. I went online and downloaded my mail from the Yahoo! mail site. When I opened the photo, I could surf forward and backward, all of my Temporary Internet files. (just the ones that are viewable in Pic and Fax viewer) I could not see cookies or website addresses.
I consider this to be a pretty significant security issue. I have not reloaded IE7 nor have I tried the same thing since I removed it.
Both of us have XP, Yahoo! Messenger 8.0 or 8.1. We were using Voice Chat at the time and possibly had the Share Photos feature of Messenger turned on. I’m not saying that IE7 is the culprit, but it may be involved.
Any thoughts?
Did you try to scan for viruses? or spyware? I have been useing IE7 since the first beta came out and never had problems sending email with yahoo mail.
Actually Chris it has nothing to do with spyware and stuff (Plus he doesn’t have a problem sending e-mail). I tried it on myself, and was able to view my temporary internet files that way. Then i went back and looked through old attachments people sent me and i could view theirs. Very weird to be able to do that…..

Would hope they do something to change this.
*edit* Well after looking again i’m not so sure, i think they are MY temporary internet files as pictures from BBB show up! So maybe it was her temporary internet files? Just that you two visited the same sites?
Ok I got it to work and They are my own temporary internet files. I had people send me email with pics and they were the same pics from everyone and from webpages I go to.
To try it yourself when you click on the attachment. click to open file do not download attachment, then click next image.
When you click to open a photo attachment. The file must be saved on to your computer before at can be opened. So whats a better place to put a file you did not click save? but the temp internet dir. Thats why you can see your Temp internet photos when you click next.
Yes, when I email a photo to myself, I see my own cache when I scroll in the viewer, but she saw MY cache. She described photos that I know she wouldn’t have on her computer. Things that I surfed on eBay, and websites about machine tools. She was seeing my Temp files, there’s no doubt. I think it has more to do with Messenger Voice chat, or more than likely, the Photo Share feature. I think we had that open when I forwarded her the photo. The direct connection between computers for Photo Share probably let her access my Temp cache. IE7 might have something to do with it as well.
Can anyone try that with a friend in chat? Voice chat going, Photo Share on, email opened online…Update: She can see the contents of the LAST folder that I opened a photo of in Windows Picture and Fax Viewer. Apparently, the Viewer defaults to the last folder. Now, when she downloads the email photo, she can see the photos in My Pictures on my computer, not hers. Scary.
I don’t understand how your Temporary Internet files were transfered. If you do not save the file when you download it, it gets saved in your Temp Internet files, and sure, when you hit the next image button, you will see other images that were downloaded to your temp folder (such as images from sites you have visited) but I definitely don’t understand exactly HOW it’s possible that your whole temp folder of images could be transfered.
When she downloaded the image, was the size of the .jpg larger than normal? I truly dumbfounded trying to imagine HOW that happened.

Also curious, is her being able to view them, in real time? I mean, when you are offline, is she still able to view them? Perhaps is there some sort of direct connection between computers here?

Here’s what I think is going on. We were connected through Messenger with Voice. She downloaded a normal sized .jpg file from the email I sent, but somehow, Picture and Fax Viewer on her machine linked directly to the default folder of my PFV, which in this case was the Temp. Int. file folder. PFV defaults to the last folder you opened a photo. I dumped my Temp. files while she was looking at them and she couldn’t see them any longer. The next day, she downloaded that photo again, and this time I had looked at photos that I keep in My Pictures. She could surf through that folder as well. That time, I only had Messenger on, but we weren’t Voicing and did not have an IM box open. We were talking on the phone. She cannot access my files as long as Messenger is off. That’s all I know.
I posted this same problem in YTunnelPro and Microsoft to see if anyone there can figure it out.
I am hoping that someone with a friend that downloads their email from Yahoo! could experiment with this to try to duplicate it.
