What is your operating system?
Is your antivirus software kept up to date?
When was your system last running perfectly?
What software has been installed since then?
What software has been removed since then?
Has your system run perfectly using this version before? If No give details.
Are you a newbie, novice, knowlegable user, expert.?

What software has been installed since then? … I downloaded 5.5 yahoo IM and a pop up stopper .. which I deleted and reinstalled thinking it was the problem
What software has been removed since then? well yahoo IM and my old explorer and installed 6.o explorer as yahoo told me to do…
Has your system run perfectly using this version before? If No give details……. my system was fine untill I updated to 5.5 yahoo IM and it worked two days after just fine then on the 3rd day it would not let me log on without the kernel32.dll error.

MemberQuote:quote:almost ready to format C the laptop and start over…Uh huh, a rather drastic step, try to refresh the OS first. I suspect IE6 is responsible, its an install that if interupted even momentarily can destroy a perfectly good OS.
You anti virus is I think about 2 years old and no longer effective.
A software upgrade as opposed to a new install is often a retrograde step as any current yet undiscovered errors within the old OS is simply transfered to the later OS.
From the foregoing you may decide that a format and install is the more simple path to follow.
