I was talking to someone and he said that he could see my IP cuz he is running an IP sniffer. Is there really an IP sniffer that works with yahoo chat AND[/b] give your computer’s IP rather than yahoo ID?
We weren’t having a voice chat connection/send file/ or anything like that, just private message (the only thing i could find in relation to this topic in archive post said that those were the only ways a person could see your IP through netstat). Do you think he is bull****ting me or is there an IP sniffer that works with yahoo?
C.S.
PS. I have changed my ID many times but he immediately knows its me when i join a chatroom…good indication that he isn’t lying?
August 15, 2003 at 12:24 am #65227Purple LlamaMemberyea this guy isn’t bull****ting
to my knowledge what he did was download an IP sniffers program which shows hidden IP adressessame thing happened to me in yahoo chat….also, if he has your IP i think he can make a clone of your account, it happened to me where some person cloned my accout and logged in under my name
just remember the majority of them just bull **** and try to scare you

So I don’t think it would be that far fetched for someone to make an IP stealer.
August 15, 2003 at 12:10 pm #65219freddyMemberYahoo! sends a packet to each person with the other persons IP address. If they are both using software that will allow a p2p, the server with messenger will then open the connections, and so if you have a Packet Sniffer / network monitoring tool you can look at these packets and extract the IP.
Also once one of these sessions has begun, you can use netstat, or indeed again see in your Packet sniffer which IPs packets are transferring between.
The only solution to this, is not to use a firewall, but to use a SOCKS5 proxy remotely located, this would incurr a charge, such as the $20 a month the proxy connection charge for such a service.
August 16, 2003 at 9:25 am #65222WakinaMemberI’ve just downloaded a free proxy application from download.com but I haven’t tried it yet. What would be the difference in this and a paid SOCKS5 proxy? Are any of the free ones any good?
August 16, 2003 at 11:41 am #65218freddyMemberThe paid service is a company who manage their own servers, hence they work well.
You can download programs like multi proxy which gather lists of servers off the internet, it takes hours a day to verify which ones work, and then many of them don’t actually work properly.
It’s not worth the time playing with free ones, and its not worth the money for the paid ones. People can’t do much with IPs, its just made to look so by the less intelligable, or those wanting your money for software to “protect” you.
If you have a firewall, no one can hack you (if it’s set up right) this includes free ones. ZoneAlarm,Sygate,Outpost…
If you have an antivirus, you protected against viruses, this again includes free ones. AVG….If you use dial-up, your IP address is dynamic, and changes every time you re login.
Some DSL connections are also dynamic, such as a refresh every 72hrs…August 16, 2003 at 12:11 pm #65221WakinaMemberYes, I’ve downloaded multi proxy, but haven’t checked it out yet. I’m using ZoneAlarm and Norton AntiVirus also. All of the security websites I’ve checked out say that my ports are invisible. I was just interested in checking out a proxy to hide my IP address. I’m on cable and use the same IP all the time, and that’s the only vulnerability that the online security sites tell me about.
Thanks for the info, Freddy. Your comments here are always helpful. I really dig your website also. It’s a great resource for Yahoo chataholics such as myself.
August 17, 2003 at 3:50 am #65220ivebeena_bad_bad_girlMemberJust as a little helpful hint- if any of those younguns come in Adult Chat- or even worse- old men looking for younguns- fake an IP address and state their name like this: UserID your IP address 12.456.234.32 (trust me its not necessary to get the decimals right) has been traced and your presence and behavior in this room has been reported to Yahoo! administrators- gets rid of them sooo fast 99% of the time.
I figure with the young kids they are too scared to come on for at least a few hours- and with the perverts- well they probably just change rooms but they are out of your hair at least. And well of course- you can always REALLY report them— everyone knows how well that works
August 17, 2003 at 2:35 pm #65226Purple LlamaMemberwell i’ve been reported, or someone said they would and did report me a few times but i’m still here…..so what happens when you get reported?
August 17, 2003 at 8:54 pm #65228yeah rightMembercherry do you change your name but have it on the same account??? if so thats how hes doing it
August 17, 2003 at 9:06 pm #65217freddyMemberIf someone reports someone for abuse, not much happens after that. The person who reported you gets an e-mail about ignoring the user so they don’t see their chat.
Some people say if the report abuse link from within an official client is clicked, it saves a “legal” (it is not legal) transcript at Yahoo!. Unless you was doing something really stupid and visible on the scripts, nothing is going to happen. Yahoo! don’t read the abuse reports probably, because its all automated.
August 18, 2003 at 7:00 pm #65211NettiMemberOk, here’s a new one on me. Someone informed me that they had a PM grabber, which I assumed was a log of some kind for pm’s. We were joking around and he told me that in fact it somehow interrupts or gets in the middle of a pm between two individuals, and he can log a copy of their pm.
Of course I told him he was full of it, but then he told me to pm anyone in the room, and not tell him who (was starting to feel like a magic trick). So I did. I pm’d someone, typed a few lines, and five minutes later he was cutting and pasting our conversation in the room. This shocked me. I had no clue this was even out there, or available. Has anyone heard of this???
August 20, 2003 at 6:20 pm #65229pasalcosMemberok – this is all fascinating to me … as a “rookie” in this game of cat-n-mouse called chat, my wife tells me that she KNOWS when i have followed her into a room in a “traveling” nic (one that i use for better anonymity) – does she have a program of some sort (someone sed an IP “sniffer”) that shows me even tho i log into yahell (messenger) “invisible?” this is all new to me, and i really want to know.
also – does the y!Tunnel program really block comeone’s chances of “seeing” your IP?
also – someone said that on dial up (me) your IP changes each time you go online. i thot that your IP was automatically a part of the programming of your hard drive – an internal registration, as it were …
help???
thanks.
alexNovember 9, 2003 at 7:58 am #65231phenix1077MemberI know this is an old post but I was just wondering how you can go about something like that (IE seeing someone on invisable mode). Something I would like to try for fun. Just wondering how meny people on my list really do that. I for 1 hide my status but really woulden’t care if someone knew I was. Half my friends list knows I do so I tell them and send messages in this way. Just something fun I would like to try out and maybe mess with a few close RL friends with such a power.
If this type of info exchange is agenst bored rules please delete my post and kindly have an admin let me know. Thanks in advance
:DNovember 10, 2003 at 11:31 pm #65230m4id3nMemberIf you are worried about someone sniffing your ip there is a simple solution. Ip spoofing. Theres countless programs out there which allow you to do this and the majority of them are free. I use one called winspoof. But I can’t recall where I got it. All I know is it works. Someone told me once he had grabbed my ip I was like ok what ya gonna do with it. He was like toast your computer. Im still waiting. I don’t go into chat without it.
