FREE WORLDWIDE CALLS.
Use Yahoo! Messenger to call and talk over the Internet just like you’re on the phone. All you need is a headset, or a microphone and speakers. It’s that easy – just click the Call button. If no one’s there, leave a voicemail! You can also get much better sound quality than regular phone lines. Try it out – you and your friends will really hear a difference.
This for the new (May 2005) YM v.7 Beta.
As a longtime YM user I am RAPT!
The best IM just got better, IMHO.Skype is undoubtedly the market leader, having got a good jump on the rest, but now giant Yahoo is about to take up the challenge. I haven’t used the “Call” function PC-to-Phone option yet, but the PC-to-PC is superb. And if my YM buddy is not online I can use Call to leave a Voice Message for him/her – no more typing. 😉
But, having used Skype a bit, I have to say the YM VOIP is not quite the same voice quality yet. Not much difference if both parties use headsets, but Skype seems to also have some amazing “echo cancelling” function which lets it be used even by those using speakers and mic.

The “free world-wide calls” bit is a little overstated. What it should say is “free worldwide PC-to-PC calls.” The PC-to-Phone calls require a paid service offered by Yahoo through Net2Phone (similar to SkypeOut).
I’ll have to test the new voice calling features of the Yahoo! Messenger beta. I’ve been using Skype more and more recently (including Skype out, and even on my iPAQ via a wireless connection), and it’s pretty hard to beat. Their underlying technology uses peer-to-peer communication rather than central servers seems to be a key part of their sound quality (and their business success — “Look ma, no infrastructure!”).
One other thing that I really, really like about Skype? It manages to sneak past most corporate firewalls, even with voice! Where I work, Yahoo is completely blocked.

Yahoo is not alone in overselling!
Pretty much a “ditto” from http://www.skype.com here  :Skype is for calling other people on their computers or phones. Download Skype and start calling for free all over the world.
Anyway, Yahoo doesn’t appear to quite match Skype rates (US residents pay US2c/min to call US – non-US folks, like me, seem strangely discriminated against, paying 10c/min!).
But having had insurmountable credit card problems with Skype in the past, I’ve now signed up and paid on Yahoo (in about 2 minutes!) then called – PC-to-Phone – a friend in USA, with absolutely no problem, and excellent voice quality.
I’m delighted! 😀June 20, 2005 at 5:44 pm #123353Eagle_KiwiMemberO o p s.
Net2Phone have now closed my a/c as they “couldn’t” verify my (perfectly valid, Visa) credit card details. They emailed me for some further details, which I gave them, but STILL not satisfied they then requested I FAX them some stuff.
At this point I refused. 😡Has anyone else (from other than USA/Canada) had problems…. or indeed had NO problems…. with Net2Phone credit cards ?
