Ok am loosing my mind here trying to figure this out. Here’s what happened. I decided to uninstall Yahoo Messenger 8.0 before I downloaded the newer version with the security updates. I did the uninstall and it left one file YMMAPI.dll in the Yahoo/Common folder. I couldn’t delete it normally so I moved it to the desktop, renamed it, then was able to delete it. I then deleted the Yahoo Registry keys in HKEY Current User and HKEY Local machine. Then downloaded the newest version from Yahoo……installed it without choosing the Yahoo toolbar and BHO options……and it said Installation successful. Restarted computer……clicked the desktop yahoo icon – NOTHING happens. Opened the Program/Yahoo/Messenger folder and clicked the actual Messenger Program – NOTHING happens. See that there is a install log-file within the Messenger folder so I opened it with notepad and can’t really make heads or tails of it. . .so I deleted Yahoo again (same procedure as b4) tried downloading again without firewall or anti-virus enabled…..same result. Cannot get the program to run whatsoever. Any suggestions????

Here is a link for the full Yahoo! Messenger installer…

Personally I just install the latest version of Yahoo Messenger over the old one, and it hasn’t given me any trouble.
June 27, 2007 at 8:43 am #162441TheBlondeAsianMemberOk I tried Venom’s advice and downloaded the file and about 87% of the way there – I get a message that – I do not have permission to make changes and that I need to rerun the installation as an administrator…..blah blah blah. Ok I have already searched for this message and in case anyone gives me the “you are not logged in as admin, etc., etc.” I am the ONLY one who uses this computer, I am currently logged in AS the administrator (with full rights) and yet I continue to recieve this message when trying to install Messenger. On a side note I have recently installed a few other programs and not had any problems. Ok now what??? This is just crazy…..
June 27, 2007 at 2:57 pm #162439Doris KenneyParticipantAre you using Windows XP or Vista? In Vista you may need to turn off your User Account Controls.
June 27, 2007 at 5:26 pm #162442TheBlondeAsianMemberI am using Windows XP Pro SP2
June 27, 2007 at 5:32 pm #162435imported_Ven0mMemberIf you’re using a limited Windows user account, I don’t think it’s possible to install it. You have to be on the Administrator user account to install it.
June 27, 2007 at 6:22 pm #162440CheshyMemberYou could try the following on Windows XP to get temporary administrator rights.
1. Hold down the Shift key and right-click on the setup file.
2. Click “Run as..”
3. Type in a username and password that have Administrative permissions. Or use the account called Administrator.
Maybe it will install that way.June 28, 2007 at 3:38 am #162443TheBlondeAsianMemberI am on an administrator account. Have checked it and rechecked it. And I already tried to do the ‘Run as…” and nothing seems to work. Wonder if the registry is somehow corrupted….
June 28, 2007 at 5:49 am #162436imported_Ven0mMemberIt’s quite possible, especially if the registry permissions get messed up (I’d know all too well about this). I ended up having to reformat to fix a registry permissions issue in the past.
June 28, 2007 at 6:27 am #162438PhilipModeratorHi, TheBlondeAsian:
I don’t know whether this will work for you, but give it a try.
- Go to Start > Run. Type regedit and press Enter.
- You’ll see the Registry Editor open up. Make sure you can see the 5 main keys on the left, i.e. Hkey_Classes_Root, Hkey_Current_User, and so on.
- Right-click on each key and click on Permissions. For every key, ensure that Administrators are given Full Control and Read by checking the Allow boxes.
- Close the Registry Editor. Try installing Yahoo Messenger again.
Post back if you’re still having trouble. Good luck.
