MemberHi John. And Welcome here to the BBB 🙂
Firstly, the “normal” setting for YM should be to have “Messenger”, “Connection Preferences” set to NO PROXIES, then you shouldn’t have to worry about proxy numbers or any such complicated stuff.
If that doesn’t let u log in, then I’d suggest
- Try (temporarily) completely disabling any firewall you have – see if that helps. Or…
- Try accessing your YM account via the WEB-BASED YM (or Meebo), available here.
If either of those DON’T work for you, then I’d suggest a problem with your actual Yahoo account – but if either webbased option DOES work, then I guess you still have some setting wrong on your ordinary YM.
Let’s know what happens. And . . good luck.

MemberOk John …. you’re making progress anyway 😉
Assuming you have a normal Windows XP, and using the built-in Windows firewall, go to Start, Control Panel, Security Center.
This will show if your firewall is ON or OFF – if it’s ON then click “Windows Firewall” at bottom of that window.
This brings up the firewall window, where you turn it OFF. (It’s probably safe to ignore their “not recommended” as long as – no matter what – you will turn it back ON again in a few minutes !).Once you’ve done that, try to open YM again. If it works (at last!?) – then you know it IS the firewall causing the blockage, so try in that firewall window going to the Exceptions tag, and scrolling down to see if “Yahoo Messenger” is ticked in there (it should be, to advise the firewall to make an “exception” and let YM traffic through).
Let’s know progress after that. 🙂

MemberYou’re most welcome – I’m just annoyed we haven’t resolved this yet.
Perhaps check THIS post (from BBB YM FAQs) for any clue ?And maybe also post here details of your system, such as:
Operating system (is it XP or XP-SP2, etc ?)
Internet connection (dialup or broadband, and if latter, do you have a router)
Antivirus program (Nortons, AVG, etc etc ?)
Firewall (perhaps Zone Alarm, Comodo, etc ??)And – at risk of opening a Pandora’s box 😉 – I wonder do you have any OTHER odd problems with other programs ?

MemberI have been using YIM for a long time. I have an answer to some of the probs that people are having with logging into IM when they can still log into thier Yahoo Email. I went through this before and now I am going through this again… Yahoo wants us all to upgrade!!! When you upgrade, it fixes the sign in probs but then the new 9.0 sucks. It locks up all the time and it has probs working with other installed programs so it takes forever and hangs up on some web cams and other things that might be a little dated. Every so often Yahoo will put out a certain patch that will not let you comunicate through some of the older versions of YIM that have very little probs. They want you to use the newer versions and yet, not fix the problems=(probs). So now I am yet again foeced to hunt for and install a different, older version of IM. I am thinking of completely changing, very soon!!!!!!
