Thought I’d repost to see if any new thoughts out there.
The question is: Has anyone got Yahoo’s Super Webcam to work at the promised frame rate of over 20 frames per second. I barely get 1 fps, and that’s with a Pentium 2.0, 512k RAM and high speed cable modem connections on both ends, with firewalls disabled.
November 8, 2002 at 1:20 am #66493JerkyChewMemberYou sure it’s running in super mode? When the cam is up and running, look in the bottom right corner of your window. Does it say it’s in “Super mode format”, or does it say super mode unavailable? Sounds to me like you’re not in super mode.
November 25, 2002 at 10:35 pm #66495mick1016MemberIt just says super mode unavailable, even though my system seems to meet all the requirements. What settings have you found to work?
November 25, 2002 at 11:26 pm #66490Jeff HesterKeymasterI use a Linksys router, but I’ve opened up the necessary ports for Super Webcam mode and have NEVER gotten it to work. I don’t know anyone who has gotten it to work, either.
November 26, 2002 at 8:43 am #66492pkforchMemberi have t-dsl with p4 2Ghz.
max frame rate i got is 3.4November 26, 2002 at 5:33 pm #66494mick1016MemberMy frame rate tops out at .73 fps, even though I have a Pentium 4, 2.0 mhz, 512 mb RAM, broadband connection measured up to 2.4 mb/sec. with firewalls open and a Logitech 4000 webcam.
My daughter told me recently that a similar webcam setup on her end began to operate at high speed with near real-time lifelike motion on its own, but it only lasted for about 30 seconds.
November 26, 2002 at 10:59 pm #66491SathallrinMemberWith one person, I can get super web cam to work fast… We open a 2 way super web cam using the large picture mode, and it runs at about 15 fps both ways. One side being on a school connection, and the other on a normal cable modem, going all the way across the country… East coast to West coast.
Most users I havent been able to get super to work, even when we are both still on fast connections. I guess just some connections are luckier then others.
November 27, 2002 at 12:57 am #66489Jeff HesterKeymasterSathallrin, are you behind a router? I’ve heard that some people were finally able to get it working after disconnecting their router and connecting directly to their DSL or cable connection. It’s weird because they rant netstat to monitor which ports were being used, opened those ports up on the router, and still had problems. Works fine without the router; doesn’t work at all with the router. What a pain.
I need to use the router because I’ve got 4 computers that share my DSL connection, but I might test take it out just to test it. It’s nice to be able to narrow down the problem a little bit at least.
January 9, 2003 at 5:43 pm #66497AshynParticipantHi all,
Kind of an old topic here, but I’ve had a similar experience. Can’t get super webcam to work with my linksys router, but when I connected cable modem straight to the computer super mode worked for the same user I tried with before. Was just curious if anyone has found a way to get super webcam to work through a linksys router. Thanks.January 9, 2003 at 6:22 pm #66488Jeff HesterKeymasterYahoo’s super webcam won’t work through any router, period. However, I have heard reports that several people have gotten it working by putting their computer in the DMZ. Note that if you do that, your computer is highly exposed to the Internet and you should be running a firewall like ZoneAlarm for protection. Then when you want to use Super Webcam mode with someone, add their IP to your trusted zone.
January 9, 2003 at 7:41 pm #66496AshynParticipantI tried dmz, but it didn’t work for me either. ahhh well, thanks for your input 🙂
January 9, 2003 at 8:10 pm #66487Jeff HesterKeymasterAshyn, check the hardware forums at http://www.broadbandreports.com
They have the best resource for broadband users and have specific forums for each hardware vendor (Linksys, DLink, etc.).
But if you do find a solution, please let us know! 😉
January 24, 2003 at 12:33 am #66498EKatieMemberMy friend and I both have a DSL/Broadband connection. He has WinXP and I have WinME. He has set the port up (as instructed by Yahoo) but so far we have not been successful in getting the Super Mode to work. Is there a configuration change that I need to make on my end??? Does anybody have any suggestions or tricks on how to make this work?? Thanks in advance
January 24, 2003 at 6:22 am #66486Jeff HesterKeymasterEKatie, are you or your friend behind a router? I don’t know anyone who’s successfully gotten that configuration to work, even with the proper ports opened.
However…
Laurence D. sent me the following link from the Linksys KnowledgeBase: Getting “Yahoo Super Cam” Working with a Linksys Router. If you’re a Linksys user, this might help. Unfortunately, I can’t test because after 1-1/2 years, my Linksys router went *poof* 🙁
