This is not a joke.
I suggested to a work colleague today that he may have a drink problem [after I found him emptying the dregs of a can of lager for what he cheerfully called his “breakfast”].
His reply was “Yes, I have a drink problem: I can’t get enough of it!”
What do you say in the face of such blooded-minded stubbornness?
I was lost for words.

meh… there’s not much you can say. i’m surprised that he was draining a can of “lager” as you call it at work. is that not against the rules of just about every company in existence? unfortunately, it’s really not your place to do much about it unless it starts affecting his work performance.

Perhaps the point is that alcohol is a far more dangerous drug than any other in that accounts for more deaths than any other supposedly “hard” drug, or even the much villified tabacco.
Yet it’s connived at by governments.
You can walk into a nice clean shop and buy it over the counter, no need for shady deals on a backstreet.
Sorry, I seem to be going on abit but the hypocrisy of it all annoys me.

He’s obviously not hiding it, and is aware that he has a problem. Real issue here is that if he doesn’t see the need to quit, he won’t. Perhaps some consequences will hasten that vision, but ultimately it is up to him to take that first step.
Does your company offer employee assistance for such issues? I have worked at places that see alcholism as a disease just as much as any other germ-induced condition and offer treatment options that allow the employee to keep their job while involved in the recovery process.
I won’t make any value judgements on a drinker. You just don’t ever know why or how they arrived at this point; but what we can offer is a reality check of what can happen if they continue down that road – and support as they make their way back.
Perhaps the light-hearted response he made as well as *allowing* you to find him finishing his breakfast was him asking for help. Dunno . . . but your gut will tell you the right thing to do.

It recognises alcoholism as a disease and as such you cannot be sacked for it if you admit you have a problem. I work for the local council, which is essentially the place that administers local taxes and how they are spent etc, [for those outside the UK, which is probably most of you] and we have stronger unionism than most places around at the moment.
Yet this system gets abused, as all things that are there for a minority of extreme cases but open to everybody perhaps do.
I have known a man [not the one I’m refering to on this thread] who said he was an alcoholic to get the time off to go for this psychological “treatment” just because it was time away from work [because the treatment is in our time, not theirs].
So the managers are abit wary of going there, they know that the upshot of reporting somebody for alcohol abuse is the person will confess his alcoholism to save his job, then he will be allowed this time out for counselling, and ultimately nothing will change apart from that they will get even less work out of them than usual because of the time off.
Sorry, that all seems abit depressing.
