MemberLet me give my latest viewpoints about IMs!
I’ll start off with MSN, because this is the one I’ve been using from when I started using computers in 1997. It was so amazing that I could send and receive “emails” (thats what I used to call it when I was 9) in a second. I then got Yahoo! somehow. And believe me, I didn’t even know about AIM & ICQ untill I joined this site in 2001. I learnt a lot from BigBlueBall and I’m always learning something.Right, here are my viewpoints about Instant Messengers then…
MSN. It is so far my favourite. I’ve always used it and always will. It is stable and attractive too. And most of my friends have MSN, so I can’t really replace it. And after the launch of MSNm6, it has attracted me more, I love its features, specially display picture thing, and the way it displays pictures in preview before we accpet it. It is so far best!
AIM. It is stable, very stable! But not too attractive. I don’t like it too much but I have to use it when I have to contact my only AIM contact when my MSN crashes. One of the reasons I don’t use AIM too much is that I don’t have enough contacts in it, and as I mentioned in another topic about contacts, that I have only about 5 for AIM. And only one of them is online everyday.
Yahoo! It is not stable. Might be a bit attractive but not in my opinion. Its just so crap as far as i’m concerend. Not stable enough to be used as a defaukt IM.
ICQ. One thing I hate about it is that you can’t press enter to send your IM. Otherwise its quite stable and attractive too.
Trillian. Its one of the best, not one of the Big Four but still.. I like it becase of some reasons;
1. Its stable
2. Its attractive
3. You don’t need to bother with 4 applications, just run one which works better than 4 indivisual IMs!Odigo. It is quite good. I’ve only been using it from a month, but I find it quite nice.
(Off-topic: By the way, does anyone here know an OSI for Odigo?)
But I use MSN as my default IM. As I’ve already said a lot about it. It is simply the best!

MemberThe popularity for the big 4 are by region and age.
Austrailians prefer MSN as I see it, as all my friends their use it. Everyone I know in Kentucky uses MSN.
The Teen world uses AIM more because it’s the cool thing to use. But where I live in Orlando Florida, MSN is becoming more and more popular. I add a new person froms school to MSN everyday. It’s great because, I choose MSN over AIM, but use AIM/AOL most because EVERYONE has it.

ParticipantHi
I use Trillian to connect to AIM, Y!, MSN 6.1, ICQ (I don’t use IRC).
The Y! Messenger client is annoying-and the emotions are poor on Y! On both the ‘offficial’ Y! Msg. and TrillianApril 4, 2004 at 1:56 pm #69128dme
MemberMSN Messenger got my vote… Right compromise between simlicity of use and functionality.
Taking a look at the polls, I’d say that although (correct me if i’m wrong) AIM has the most users, MSN is prefered by the more advanced/tech users. Longs gone are the days of ICQ, on which I started IM. I miss it, and respect it as the Ancestor of IM in my life today.

MemberI had to vote for AIM because EVERYONE that I know uses AIM (a few also use MSN but all of my MSN contacts also use AIM). If I had a choice I’d choose MSN but where I live (Arizona) AIM seems like it is synonomous with Instant Messaging and where I used to live in Virginia AIM was the only real game in town because AOL was based there and everyone knew someone who worked for AOL, etc. As far as user interface, I think that MSN by far is the best of the big 4 (although I only use AIM, GAIM, and Trillian Pro).

MemberI would have to say my favorite is aim because all of my friends are on it, and it seems like the most used. They have a ton of work to do, aim really isn’t that great. I don’t like MSN one bit, I am surprised it is the best. I think out of all yahoo is probably the best, but the buddy list/ interface is waaaaaaaaaaaaay to big.

ParticipantI would vote (and I have) MSN, because it’s simple, easy to use, and pretty much everybody in my area has it.

MemberYeah if I had to choose one of those messengers I would definetly choose MSN cuz its just so easy to use and it would be so fun with the games and stuff. It was also very easy to look at. It was very user-freindly. I also think MSN internet browser is on of the best out there also
