ParticipantWell, as much as I wish that we had found a solution, I have to break the news that we don’t. On the original machine I had been having problems with, I know I had tried using the software with and without DeadAIM, not to mention that I never used the cloning feature in the first place. Regardless, I now have the camera on a machine that has never had AIM, the Logitech software, etc. installed on it. After doing fresh installs of the newest Logitech software and AIM, I have the problems. Haven’t even tried to touch DeadAIM yet.
I’ll try it on yet another machine when I get the chance. I’m wondering if the software’s having trouble getting a unique link for the video-chat sessions… like maybe my firewall’s blocking the port it needs or something. I don’t *think* that’s the case, but at this point who knows?!

ParticipantWell, I hadn’t done any updates, Windows-wise, between having the app work and not work, but who knows… there’s got to be a common link that’s messing this all up. It’d be nice if the software was open-source and we could just see how it’s working, huh?
Regardless, I (we) appreciate your help… pretty cool of you to try to help even though it’s not your problem. 🙂
I think I’m going to install windows on my linux box, throw the cam on there, and see whether it works or not. That would rule out my router/firewall interferring with it. I can’t imagine how many people this is affecting who aren’t computer-savvy enough to seek a solution on their own… Logitech needs to get on the ball with this.

ParticipantQuote:quote:Originally posted by inc77Hopefully this helps someone crack this case… Im having similar problems as everyone else with an AIM window opening without a link… well messing around (im still not sure how this occured) i was able to find a link by using “insert” -> “hyperlink” -> “use current”… well here’s the link i got:
http://companion.logitech.com/companion/logitech/viewer2.html?sn=uMhttp://www.aim.com/index.adp
sadly i’ve tried with my bro and its not working (firewall problems perhaps?)… well i tried to produce another link but that certain link wouldn’t come up anymore… anyone got any ideas?
‘Use Current’ pastes the current address in your browser…
I don’t know if a firewall would be affecting this whole thing at all or not… I think the program gets a unique link to send each time so that it’s more secure… but maybe it just generates itself locally… hell, I don’t know. This sucks though, huh?

have you go to windows updates to assure you have all service packs and critical updates? * maybe way off here. but the blank part makes me think this….
Windows critical updates http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ (click product updates) then product updates. let it work…get all critical ones..go back until it shows no more criticals today
another possible thing to check…. you may have scripting disabled…Click the Tools menu on your Internet Explorer toolbar, select Internet Options, and select the Security tab.
Click the Internet (globe) icon and select the Custom Level button.
Scroll down to Scripting and make sure that Active scripting, Allow paste operations via script, and Scripting of Java applets are all enabled.
restart the messenger program. see if that does it……..
again. maybe way off….. but……. the blank part rings a bell…..
good luck!Your suggestions seem to indicate that you think this all has something to do with Internet Explorer… am I getting the wrong idea? If not, I doubt these are solutions… though getting windows updates is generally a good idea (just get them a week or two late… sometimes they break more than they fix and you don’t want to be the guinnea pig).
Though I never got anyone to actually see my video (I think it was a problem on their end), there was a time when this software worked for me and it would actually send the link. I didn’t use it for a little while, though, and the next time I tried (IIRC) it forced me to update the software, and hasn’t worked since. No significant changes were made to my machine in the meantime (it’s a server, so it’s pretty much been the same for quite a while).
I believe this is a bug with the software, and now am just trying to sort out what’s triggering it. I don’t think it’s hardware related, so anyone having this problem, maybe we can see if there’s something we all have in common… I’m running XP (not SP-1, though I suppose I could go through the procedure of putting it on as a last resort)… I’ve tried a fresh boot with no other programs running and still no go, still trying disabling different services to see if there’s a conflict somewhere.
If everyone having this problem would send Logitech an email maybe they’d get on the ball with a solution a little sooner…

Participantnothing in my ‘startup’ programs that’s causing the error… I might try disabling some services next, but somehow I doubt that’s an issue…

ParticipantI got a reply from Logitech in the form of an e-mail asking me to call their live tech support, which I reluctantly did. After waiting on hold, followed by having to basically teach the guy how the software works, then answering all the basic questions (what hardware, software versions, etc) 3 times, he had nothing to offer… supposedly forwarded the case on to see if anyone else could figure it out.
I tried to point them to these forums showing that it’s not like it’s an isolated problem, as well as tried to convince him that this has nothing to do with internet connection type/speed, hardware, or any of the other crap he was asking about. It’s a bug in the damn software.
Anyway, we’re going to have to figure this one out on our own, I think. Since I don’t know exactly how the software works, I thought I’d open up the clipboard viewer, hoping that the link just wasn’t getting to AIM, but nothing showed up there. I’m going to start up with absolutely nothing else running and see if any of that’s interferring… I’ll post here after messing around a little more.
I’d post system specs, but I don’t think this is hardware related at all, especially because this software actually did work at one time for me… breifly, before I was forced to upgrade to a newer version. I didn’t mess with it too much, but the link part showed up and all. Anyway, I’ll be back…

ParticipantWish I could say that I had found an answer, but I still haven’t either… I’m contacting Logitech support tonight and pointing them towards this forum to show that it’s not just an isolated incident. I’ll let you know if I find out anything.

ParticipantThe point is, my friend, that most people already have AIM, MSN, etc… and aren’t probably going to want to run yet ANOTHER IM app. That’s why I run Trillian… I got sick of having to have 3+ IM apps open just to keep in touch with people. The nice thing about Logitech IM Companion was that it worked with AIM and MSN, which are probably the most widely-used IM platforms… Y! (so I’ve heard) has built-in webcam support, so Logitech was only leaving out ICQ…
The video clip funtionality is pointless, since it’s easy to record your own clips and then just send them as normal file transfers. I did try the software and it worked, but I still have to expect everyone I know to go download this new app and that’s just a pain when they all already have MSN or AIM, know what I mean?
Anyway, thanks for the heads up on EC… it’s a temporary solution until this Logitech IM Companion thing gets figured out.

ParticipantProblem with eyeball chat is that to have people see a streaming video of you (as far as I can tell), they have to download the client… otherwise, you have to resort to recording videos and transferring them… correct me if I’m wrong.
I got this webcam so I could *stream* video to my friends/family back home… I don’t really have the time or energy right now to learn how to run my own webserver that would be capable of streaming it for me… I would think that there’s got to be a plug-in out there that works… hopefully Logitech figures out the bug and gets this one working.
What’d be REALLY nice is if there was a plug-in for Trillian Pro…

ParticipantI’m having the same exact problem with AIM… it worked fine before I was forced to upgrade my version of IM Companion… I’ve tried complete uninstall/reinstalls of everything, thoroughly cleaning my registry in between, and no luck… I’m running XP, but not SP1… I’m hoping to help find a solution for this… anyone else had any luck yet?
