IM Video Companion is a new add-on application from Logitech that lets you share video with your MSN and AIM buddies. It’s free, it runs on Windows only (though you can view the video on any OS supported by MSN or AIM), and it works with any webcams.
You can read my initial review of IM Video Companion (with screen shots), or download it now. Special thanks to Shearheaven for helping me test.
Have you tried it? What do you think of it?

September 17, 2002 at 7:50 pm #101328JerkyChewMemberThis is a neat app. It’s the first one I’ve gotten to stream video through my firewall, which is a feat in itself. I like that they let you change the default ports (my firewall is also my webserver, so I didn’t want it taking over port 80). Remapped it to ports 81 and 8181, updated the firewall, and everything was happy.
One of the neat things is the security feature they put in. If you invite somebody to view your cam, it sends them a link (I only use AIM… dunno about MSN). If another user tries viewing the cam with that link, it won’t let them. Kinda nice touch if you wanna have a private conversation.
My one complaint is that you can’t resize the video. Since most of my friends are on cable, bandwidth isn’t that big a deal. I’d like to be able to make the stream resolution bigger in the future.
October 9, 2002 at 6:21 pm #101326FrutZleMemberI like the idea behind the app, but nobody’s been able to connect to it (probably ZoneAlarm being a PITA again) so I uninstalled it for now.
Also, MSN Messenger for XP has a webcam feature built in if I’m not mistaken. The only problem there is that I don’t have XP and you can’t install XP Messenger on anything but XP.
October 28, 2002 at 6:49 pm #101332FaizanMemberi have installed that software thingi but now i am waiting 4 someone to have a video conversatio with!
December 12, 2002 at 5:35 pm #101322Jeff HesterKeymasterHas anyone using this had any problems accessing their buddy list using MSN Messenger 5? I have a suspicion that Video Companion may be experiencing the same problems that many, many of the MSN add-ons are having with 5.0.
December 12, 2002 at 10:13 pm #101331FaizanMemberHmmm…that software thingi was quite slow…(with 4.x)…whenever i invited someone to view my web cam…it froze my messenger..so i just uninstalled it!
December 12, 2002 at 10:44 pm #101321Jeff HesterKeymasterIt works very fast for me. In fact, it provides the fastest, smoothest video I’ve seen; better than Windows Messenger, Yahoo Messenger or NetMeeting.
I’m still hoping someone who is using it AND running MSN Messenger 5.0 can let me know if they’re having any problems accessing their friend list via IM Video Companion…….

I’m lost. What video games?
January 6, 2003 at 2:50 am #101335QuickyMemberIt doesn’t work for me. I use it with AIM, and everytime I invite someone, it just opens their IM window, and stays still. Doesn’t generate the hyperlink or anything.
Help?January 14, 2003 at 3:56 pm #101333sciencefeelingMemberQuicky what you tell us is kinda weird. Can you explain more of your set up?, like what is your OS and if you are using dial up or broadband…if you have another conflicts with any other webcam or im app??
Not that it is going to help me solve your problem, but might help our experts…
ScienceJanuary 14, 2003 at 6:45 pm #101319Jeff HesterKeymasterQuicky, when you open the program, you should see a preview of your own cam. When you invite someone, they should see a link in their chat window that will open a browser window with your cam in it.
According to Logitech’s web site, the other person does not need to install IM Video Companion in order to view your cam, and it should work on most platforms (including Macintosh).
February 7, 2003 at 12:17 am #101336jlindenMemberI’m having the same problem as Quicky. I can install the program just fine, but the invite feature does not work. It pops up the IM window, but no invite link appears either to me or to them. I am running Win98, with a Logitech Pro 3000 camera. I can’t find any way to get support for this problem on the Logitech Companion site!
February 19, 2003 at 3:48 pm #101337refwhettMemberhi Jeff.
I have the same problem using Logitech’s IM companion. As far as I understood it it doesn’t work with msmsg 5.0 at all! 🙁
at least that’s waht it says on their site. Are there any other similar products for msmsg 5? It is a very usefull app for connecting to computer which are behind firewalls and router etc and I would like to find something that works with msmsg 5 but haven’t found anyhting yet.
any suggestions will be appreciated.
