MemberHere’s some more info for those of you having problems Uninstalling Windows Messenger 9 Beta wave 3. You apparently need to uninstall ALL of the Live beta components before you can re-install version 8.5 again.
I was getting the “catastrophic failure” failure error even after uninstalling version 9. I then ALSO uninstalled Live Movie Maker and photo gallery betas which automatically uninstalled some additional MSFT components. Only then would running the the 8.5 installer work.

MemberThat did the trick. I should additionally slam MSFT for making the install/uninstall UI for the WIndows LIve package completetly non-intuitive. It asked to check what programs I’d like to Install or Install… so I checked “windows Live Messenger”… and it uninstalled everything BUT that (since I’d checked it on. GRRR… had to run the installer again and reverse my selection.
Thanks for your help.

Membertried out the new Windows Live messenger 9.x beta 3 and discovered it doesn’t work with SIMPlite so it’s a non-starter for me at work. Went to uninstall it and can’t seem to uninstall ANY of the programs from the Live Beta suite (starting the uninstaller asks for Admin privledges on Vista, then silently fails – I’m running as admin anyway).
Grrr, can’t install version 8.5 over the top. Says “Catastrophic failure” and errors out. Thanks MSFT… now I have a messenger I won’t use for security reasons, and can’t revert. Any ideas?
