MemberOk thanks. My laptop was set for “standby” but not for hibernate. I just switched to “never” for standby and will try it. Is it good for the laptop to never go into standby or hibernate when it’s up 24/7?

Does that warrant a disconnect? I know that the desktop that I was using before would go into standby mode and still keep me connected.

MemberOk, am I doing something wrong here? I installed bannerbgone yesterday and it seemed to work. It left one ad up there in the window but the ad did not switch over to over ones. This morning I got back on aim and the ads are back in the window just like before bannerbgone. Any ideas?

MemberOk Thanks a bunch. I just installed bannerbgone and it seems to work. Looks like it froze the last ad in the window so it still appears but at least its static. thks.

Not sure if its the right way or not but this is what I found. http://www.oneishy.com/aim_removeads.phpDarn, the above doesn’t work for me. The instructions talk about editing the aim.odl file and commenting out the load_ocm advert lines. I do not have these lines in my file. Can anyone else help me get rid of the banner ADs???? thks

MemberYes, my daughter uses AIM all of the time and has used it for years. If are careful about unchecking the 3 items on install, (you dont want weatherbug, wild tangent or aol toolbar) then you should be ok. Also once its installed, go to edit preferences, and click signon/off in the left pane and make sure that you uncheck “load aol.com at startup”. This will stop the ads from coming up. She should be ok once you do this. Just remember to do this each time you install AIM.

MemberWow Staticsage, thank you for all of the valuable information, especially about Hijackthis and Firefox. I’m pretty comfortable getting around with the computer so I shouldn’t have too tough a time with it. Like you said though, there may be startup programs that I indeed want. I ran into a recent problem where i disabled several programs from the startup menu under msconfig start options. Turns out I turned off my Norton antivirus auto-enable feature. The adhack I will definately try to. Also Someguy03, thks for the info on those 3 items that are bundled with aim. I was aware of them but I know that sometimes its easy to just click “Next” and then find that you’ve just screwed yourself good. Thanks again

MemberYes, I’ve heard of hijackthis and will give it a try. I’ve seen hijack logs listed in other forums. Does it just flag potential spyware or does it also have a built in fixit so that I don’t have to delete the programs manually? I also have SP2 loaded. The problem must really be with the aol ads that come up and then somehow invade IE. I’ve heard that firefox is great but with 3 computers in this house being used, seems everyone is accostomed to IE so we’ll probably continue using it. I thought that maybe loading down an older version of AIM, like 5.2 or something would be ad free. Those releases did not have the bundled spyware (yes wild tangent is considered spyware) or maybe it did and just didn’t give you the opportunity to not activate it. If anyone has had similar problems with AIM and their solutions, I’d love to hear about them. Thanks.

MemberI am definately a novice when it comes to using AIM but believe that the underlying instant messaging technology that each (IM) service uses is proprietary (unique to that provider) and not “open” standard. That means that AIM’s implementation vs. IBM’s or Microsoft’s Messanger is probably different. It would be interesting to see if the problems exist there with wireless routers as well. I must have just gotten lucky with my problem being fixed by a new version of AIM but that tells me that obviously a change in the AIM product, new code etcs changed the condition to no longer occur with my computer. It could be a timing problem, lost TCP information packets, any number of things. Since AIM is a free service as opposed to a product that you pay for, the developers do not have the incentive or motivation to fix this problem, although I am sure they are aware of it. Seems that there should still be some means of submitting a requirement to AOL for this to be fixed. My past experience with debugging mainframe software problems has taught me that even problems that appear to be hardware, in this case the wireless router can often be fixed on the software side, ie. dropped information bits over the wireless connection causing a timeout situation with AIM might be fixed by having the AIM software redrive the data request to keep the connection active, etc. There could be any number of possibilities. The fact that so many users are experiencing this problem and the fact that it is a solid, recreatable situation means that this could defiantely be quickly remedied if the right people looked at the problem. Trying different ports, etc is simply a band-aid approach which does not address the true underlying problem or bug! Just my $.02.

MemberNot to be rude or anything but I’m sure I know a bit more then you. (TCP/IP software developer for a major software development house for last 8 years.) I’m sure you know all about ports and orrifices! Loading down the new version worked for me. I did see that other folks still had problems with the new version but also may have other variables thrown into the fray complicating matters. Simply stated that it worked for me.

MemberThat did it!!!. Not sure how it got checked in the 1st place. Thanks.
