MemberHi guys. Should have said this before, but I have XP on my current internal hard drive (80GB). And I was thinking about installing Vista on my external hard drive (500GB), so that I don’t need to lose XP on my internal one.
Also, I may be moving the internal one to another computer. Leaving my computer left with only an external hard drive. Which is why I was asking if its possible to boot from the external drive.
Also I just bought the external one, which has plenty of space. So buying another internal hard drive wouldn’t be economical.
Thanks for the info. I will look into the USB Boot up option.

MemberI got a chance to try out Astra yesterday. It certainly looks alot different than the previous versions, and much more visually appealing. The navigation will take some getting used to, as menus and options are located in different places. I find that alot of contact options are missing from previous versions, like the ones that appear when you right-click on a contact. I managed to find some of them when I opened up a message window. So in terms of navigation, I find the previous versions a bit easier and convenient. I also wasn’t able to find the button where I could set the same status or connect/disconnect to all my connections at the same time.
Secondly, they said it would be faster, but I don’t see how this would be possible with all the colorful themes. It actually is slower when you’re scrolling through the contact list, and sometimes got laggy on my computer, especially if you display your contacts with their buddy icons.
The Alpha version only came with one skin, that only allows you to change to different colors. Overall, I think Astra could be greatly improved if they offered different skins, especially something simple like Whistler, that would greatly improve the speed and ease of use. Because the default one offered now is not as good compared to previous versions.

MemberI tried using those anonymous browsing websites and it still didn’t work. I was able to access some parts of the website, but it wouldn’t let me login. I guess it needs to verify that I’m actually in that country.

MemberNevermind, I fixed it. I had to do a repair-install of XP. Apparently when you install XP, its only told to run on that computer (hardware).
lazyturbo
MemberI guess I could hook it back up to my old computer. 🙁
Can I install XP on the slave drive first, and then transfer it over to my old computer? Do I need to buy another copy of XP?
lazyturbo
MemberWhat exactly are you trying to do though?
I share a computer with somebody else, and sometimes he takes the master drive away to use on another computer in a different location, leaving my current computer useless. So I want to install XP on the slave drive, so I can still use the computer, even when he takes away the master drive.
Thanks for the info David. I think I’ll just format the slave drive to start fresh, and then install XP on it. So your sure that I can use the same serial number on the slave drive, without screwing up anything on the master drive?
lazyturbo
MemberSo if I just want to format the slave drive (and not install XP on it), then its okay to do it in XP, right?

MemberThey’re just music files, not anything of great security. I just don’t want people copying them, I don’t mind if they listen to them while they’re on my computer.

MemberIs it possible to just stop someone from using the “ctrl-c” and “ctrl-v” functions (copy-paste) on certain files? and prevent drag-and-drop?
lazyturbo
MemberThere’s some pictures on it that I would like to keep. But now for some reason when I connect it back on my old computer, it won’t boot up either. I thought this was just a quick and easy process.
lazyturbo
MemberIt doesn’t say its checking my disk. Perhaps you misunderstood, I said the screen looks the same as when XP does scandisk.
But actually its deleting files…each line says “Deleting….” and it keeps doing it nonstop, I’m afraid its wiping my hard drive clean.
lazyturbo
MemberOh. What is it fixing? It worked fine on my old computer.
lazyturbo
MemberThe screen is like when the computer performs scandisk in DOS, with the blue XP background. And it just starts executing…deleting stuff and fixing sectors.
There weren’t any options to stop the process, nor did the power button work. I had to yank the power cable off the computer…because I was scared of what it was deleting.

MemberOk. I’m trying to use an old hard drive as a slave drive on my new computer, running on XP. When I connect the slave drive to the new computer, XP begins to bootup…but then a screen shows up and starts deleting a bunch of files and fixes sectors.
I’m assuming its doing this on the slave drive, because I cancelled this process, and connected only the master drive, and everything worked fine in XP. So should I continue on with this “deleting”= and fixing sectors” process? I’m not really sure why it has to do this.
lazyturbo
MemberThe drive is healthy…and during startup it just says “Press F4 to Resume”.
