Memberhey, i already saw that website prior to posting the queston here, thanks anyways. Really i guess i dont have to, but im really interested in internet security and i love learning about this stuff, not for any certain reason, guess its just an interest of mine, one of many, but yes, that site talks about unplugging for a set period of time, and i was too concerned that doin that would result in harm to my system or something, or make it hard to reconnect.
bte tigerblade did u see my other post about firewalls and all those ip’s it stops? whats the goal of all those people…i elaborate more in the post.

MemberOk, so if an ip address is simply a way for computers and networks to communicate and know where to send mail and all, then whats te point of firewalls? obviously they are to prevent bad things, but what kind of bad things? because i watch my firewall block hundreds of events per day, and it shows the attempted port penetration and the ip address where it comes from as well as the hostname….but what are all these companies/hackers trying to accomplish?? is it all negative stuff?? what are the deal with ports? I believe Tigerblade, you told me that IP address are no real biggy, but it sure seems like many people want at my comp as well as all the other millions of people with firewalls in this world. Is it because when we’re online we have a direct connection and anything can filter in, therefore a fireall blocks that? when we chat on AIM, we are not chatting directly correct? we type a message, it goes through a sever and then is received by our budyy right? so its not like we really even have a direct connection with our buddy unless we open one volunatrily.
just what exactly are these people trying to do, these people that my firewall is blocking, cause i trace the events to see where they are coming from and its all over.

MemberYea, but Tigerblade didnt u say that obtaining an IP address is useless really? i mean u really cant do much with it correct? isnt it more for the communication betwn comps.??? nothing to get upset about right, cause it seems like some people on this thread are.

Member10-4, thankyou sir.

MemberSo is it “safe” to say, that ULTIMATELY, no one can see ur online unless ur on their buddy list, regardless of them having ur IP add. and regardless of how many times u click to read their away message, well i guess they also wouldnt be able to see if you were online if u did that “hiding ur SN trick” but otherwise, no correct?
PS- is there a way for someone on ur buddy list or not on it for that matter, to obtain a list of the people on ur buddylist, besides themselves, say they’re curious whose on ur list, can they obtain it thru any means? what does the option in the menu labeled “my aim” on the top menu on the AIM box mean, it says “LOAD BUDDYLIST” is that any kind of revealing feature, or the”GET FILE” option?
Slickrick77
Memberif its meaningless, then why are some people all into getting their buddies IP adds. thru IM’s and all, if u cant do nuttin with it? Your saying its simply a network thing, its numbers for use by the networks? Although it is said that AIM buddies can get ur IP by chattin’ wit ya right?
do ip addresses play any kind of role in AIM?
By the way, uve answered all my messages today Tigerblade, and i really appreciate it, uve made me feel a bit safer especially with the whole AIM away message tracking questions, thanks man you really know ur $hit.
Slickrick77
Memberwhoa whoa….how is this possible for someone in between to read IM messages? explain that again? and ur saying there is no way i or a friend would know right?
Slickrick77
Membernow, does this matter. Ya know how AIM is downloadable without having to have AOL, well, does that matter, question being if im talking to someone on AIM but i have a different internet provider, and they have AOL, still, are they able to secretly see my clicks on their away message or not? b/c AIM is owned by aol correct, hence the name AOL Instant Messanger, im aware that having AOL as one’s main internet service allows for more capabilities then just d/L aim…..ig uess im really trying to say if it matters that an AIM subscriber chats with an AOL user as appose to AIM chatting with AIM user, can the AOL user do anything that the AIM user can’t? in so far as secret links embedded and profile counting?
Slickrick77
Memberso, if i understand correctly, i could have my AIM away message up and someone could view it 10, 000 times to read the away message andd without a link, i cant tell that, that is happening? what if in your profile a person just looks at ur info but neglects to click your tracking link, then you never knew they were there right?
