MemberI think that a support forum for just general computer topics, such as hardware problems or software problems (besides messengers) should be made.

MemberI think thats an awesome idea. I have trouble with my computer sometimes, and a lot of times I have no idea what to do.

ParticipantAgain, I will have to agree on this one. 3b does get ALOT of questions regaurding such issues.

Member“3B”… heh.
But isn’t this what the ‘Random Ramblings’ section is for? BigBlueBall is targetted towards instant messaging. Anything that is not related to that is suitable for the ‘Random Ramblings’ section.
If you are going to create a forum for ‘General computer problems’ and devide that into ‘Software’ and ‘Hardware’, then you could also split ‘Software’ up into ‘Linux’ and ‘Windows’. And then ‘Hardware’ into ‘Questions’, ‘Problems’ and ‘Modding’. Oh, and while you’re at it… I’d like to see a ‘Comic books’ forum.
Okay, I admit. I’m exaggerating. But I hope I still made my point. ‘General computer problems’ is a nice idea, but it is so far from Instant Messaging that it is, in my opinion, not a good idea.

MemberYes but movies and music is also far away from messaging, and forums are becoming a huge source for technical support. I have seen several tech questions slowly dissapear without any answers in the random ramblings forum. Not all of the members are “geeks” and other topics often get more replies.

ParticipantI can see both issues on this, but IMVHO, music is much further from IM than computers are (You are looking at a computer right now…), There are A TON of geeks here (If you are offended by the term geek, than you aren’t a true geek), I’d vote for this. 🙂

ParticipantI’m sorry… I’m not here for your trouble shooting issues! Repeat after me.. “I will use Google.com before asking stupid questions!”
Eh sorry about that spasing out… I deal with many folks in “Computing Chat” on AIM.

MemberI’d say go for it. It’s a good idea, but again I can also see the alternative viewpoint which is to use Random Ramblings, what are they for? But I’d actually say give it a try, because most of us are geeks anyway, we can help many people here. 🙂

MemberI think that it would be interesting if a new computer related forum was created. I wouldn’t mind posting in it. I would also consider myself one of the geeks here.

MemberWe wouldn’t even have what we know as IMs, unless we had computers…and if they aren’t running smoothly, our IM abilities are affected too!

MemberSince alot of users post in other topics besides computer related discussions in random ramblings, the computer topics often slowly slip away to page 2. For example, I asked something about a slow network, and it must have taken 2 or 3 days before it was on page 4.

Lets piss on the whole parade. 😡 Everything outside of the IM specific forum should be deleted, now see how many visitors return to the forums……….. look at the traffic… learn.
Users/visitors go where they are welcome, make them welcome give them a reason to return, dont shoot them in the foot.March 18, 2004 at 3:49 pm #82978DJHyperbyte

Now if that type of questions requires a special sub-forum is a whole different story. Most of us have our own opinions on this. I was simply vowing my opinion, sorry to heat you up.

MemberPerhaps another site, a sister site or a baby site, should start up “BeyondBigBlueBall” AKA “4B” I have to agree with DJHyperbyte, general PC problems on their own open up a HUGE can of worms. Also, the ones that have to do with IM are already dealt with on the site as it is. And I’m only half kidding about 4B….it might actually work…but it would be really hard to moderate and A LOT of work. General PC problems are a lot more varied and complex than IM problems…that’s my take on things….but who am I?

MemberQuote:quote:Now if that type of questions requires a special sub-forum is a whole different story. You don’t have to have a sub-forum if it is not a feature of forum software. Who cares? We can post hardware and software problems in one forum. That wouldn’t affect people, it’s just like posting a Maths question and a computer related question in Random Ramblings. Things still get dealt with.
