MemberEvery once in a while the AIM reconect dialog box will come up and it will reconnect immeditally. But this is getting very annoying as people think I am signing off AIM. I have DSL and I know that it is always connected. This did not start happening unil I got this new computer. The only difference is that this new one has WIN XP and my old one had WIN 98. Both were connected to DSL. My other computer that is connected to the same DSL network does not do this and has WIN 98 on it. There is no pattern of when this does this it just does it whenever. Please help this is getting very annoying!!

Participanti dont know if it’s the AIM client only though, i know mine was doing the same thing occasionally, and i use Trillian. it would only be AIM disconnecting and reconnecting, not MSN or Yahoo. i have the same basic setup as bp610 – DSL and WinXP. bp610 – do you have a router of some kind, and/or are you doing any downloading (like P2P networks, torrent files, etc?) Either of those factors could affect the connection…

MemberI do have a router. The one that came with SBC Yahoo! DSL. But I did not have this problem on my WIN 98 pc with this same router?

Memberah-HA! Giving me the information of 98 vs XP helps a whole lot. If you can remember at least one hourly time this happened, or can look at the computer’s clock next time this happens, that’ll be great.
Once you know that, (or if you want to go ahead anyways, but I’d still prefer some disconnect info), go to start>run and type in eventvwr and hit enter.
Now on the left, click on SYSTEM.
On the menu bar at the top, click on action>export list. Set the file type to Text (Comma Delimited) (*.csv) and please email it to me at jon8rfc@yahoo.com and it would greatly help if you could have the email subject set as Event Viewer.
What that is, is a list of specific errors that have occurred on your computer, and I’m looking for some specific ones. I don’t know if any of that would contain security compromising information which someone would use to attack your computer, so until there’s a definite answer for that, don’t post it publicly or email it to someone random on this forum. Only send to an Admin, Team Leader, Advisor or Mentor. You can see the badges below our forum names.

MemberI’ll post what I said to someone else:
Jon8RFC (11:10:21 AM): well, 4226 is a thing they added in sp2, and also re-added in at least 2 microsoft security/critical updates…it limits tcp “half-open” (whatever that means) connections to 10…it used to be unlimited in sp1 and previous, but they added the limit to prevent the spreading of worms
Jon8RFC (11:10:50 AM): its terrible for file sharing and can be spotted easily on shareaza…i always notice when a new update reset the limit, because i barely connect
Jon8RFC (11:10:56 AM): i read about it on the shareaza forums
Jon8RFC (11:11:02 AM): and got a patch to fix it there as well
Jon8RFC (11:11:37 AM): only recently did i think that it might be the cause of disconnects when the user is running multiple apps that use an internet connection
Jon8RFC (11:12:59 AM): the patch makes a world of difference…it defaults to reset to 50, but it max it out at something like 16777205 or something
Jon8RFC (11:13:14 AM): which is how sp1 used to beI can’t say for sure whether that is the cause or not (maxing out the connections), but if you check the timestamp and compare it to when you were disconnected, then that is most likely your problem.
For a while, I used a pre-configured tcp/ip file, but “lvllord” kept improving his event 4226 patch to the point where I use that because it’s faster, can always check to see if tcpip.sys was reset, and he keeps it up-to-date with new microsoft security/critical releases via WindowsUpdate.
I set mine to the max, as I stated above. When it’s reset, Windows will alert you that a non-recognized file replaced the original (or something similar), but just click ignore and you’re good to go. If you’re worried about stability, I can tell you that I’ve been using a patched tcpip.sys file since well before 2005 and haven’t had any problems…except when windowsupdate releases a patch and it includes a new tcpip.sys file, then I run the patcher again and I’m good to go!

MemberIf you have a Linksys router with Speedbooster… or a Netgear router, your AIM will disconnect-reconnect all the time. my friends does it every 3-10 minutes.
I’m assuming its Linksys. go to http://192.168.1.1
Put “admin” for password. leave username blank.
Find your way to Port Forwarding.. or Applications & Gaming.. it depends what router you have.
Put AIM in the name slot. Put port range 5190-5190 ..
Check the TCP box.
Find out your ip address by going to Command Prompt (Start>Run>cmd then type in ipconfig and hit enter) ..
The last three digits of your IP type in the last box.
Click the Enable box. then click Apply Changes.July 9, 2005 at 6:34 am #124956lash32
