MemberI think if a person wants to buy a sn it’s his o her business, but taking into acount how the economy is and that you have to watch every dollar you spend I think it’s pointless to spend good cash on something you can get for free. But it’s their money

MemberThis conversation brings up an interesting point… Consider Jeff’s comparison to domain name selling, via afternic, etc. If the screenname market were to become popular, how would it work? I mean, there’s no real way to put someone who wants a certain screenname in touch with the owner of that screenname. The only way I can think of is to send an IM to that person, and if their settings don’t allow IMs from people not on their contact list, the transaction has no hope of happening. Or I guess you could hope that it’s an AOL account, and send email to @aol.com. That’s it. If people really could get in touch with each other, I could see this market really taking off. There are all the reasons people mentioned here, plus some people use AIM for work purposes and would much rather have a simple, professional screenname than something like bitch4life2475.

Memberi’m NOT saying do this, but if the person had a simple enough p/w u could use a pwc, although most of the cheep ones get rated. or you could make one of you own any simple vb or c++ code would do, but my guess with the ‘sellers’ have the passwords with things less common, in that case you would have to use a brute force techniec e.g. (0000,0001,0002,0003 etc.etc.) and if its set not to rate you could cover every single possible password..since I beleve aol (if your doing this with aim) dosnt allow randome charaters like “@$^#|_” in there pass words, which is (in my opinion) a horrible falt of theres adding these simbles could stop (or slow down) any hacker trying to get into your account. and I agre w/ Jeff the only reson why ANY body would want a ‘lesser’ screen name like ‘jol;hlj;g02’ would only be a status symbl, for some reson people think they become special (-ED.) if they have a simple s/n. NOTE: PWC’s are not illigal, UNLESS you use them in an illigal action. AND I am not advertizing the use of them.
(that last note was for all the admin. that seem to have it in for me and my nasty habits)

MemberI do believe, however, the issue is that some one may one day start registering names that will never be used by that individual. Rather they were created merely for the re-sale. Understandably, some screen names need to be recycled, ant therefore ddr becomes available. But it seems rather “wrong” to sell a screen name, that at one point was freely created, when, provided its posable, it could be re-registered with the proprietor.

MemberI don’t think AOL will really be bothered by this unless it becomes a problem. People giving away screenames they don’t want anymore isn’t wrong to me, but people purposly registering screenames for resale is. Now if people are going around registering these screenames and making money off them, AOL is going to get mad. AOL will get mad because one, people are making money off something AOL is providing for FREE, and two, because screenames that people want to actually use aren’t going to be available because everyone will be registering them for sale.

MemberI agree with someguy03. it makes no sense to buy a sn from someone. if u were so desperate to have a sn, u cud just put alotta numbers at the end instead of paying some dude to give u his password so u can use it. and u never know, this guy might just be ripping u off by having u pay before he tells u the password, and then the password doesnt even work!! this guy must insane if he thinks people will be crazy enough to by a sn.
