Spike
MemberI was browsing along, and I noticed the user “TåkØÐã” (vBulletin spelling is “Takodha”). This makes me wonder if we should allow usernames like this or not, because I’m sure that some browsers won’t display this right, or people that speak different languages might read it differently what with all the accents and tildas on it. Could we put a simple RegExp on new user registration (existing would stay), something to the effect of [A-Za-z1-9], or maybe a little more allowing, but not to the extent of what Takodha did.
Agree? Disagree?

MemberI agree with Spike

MemberI agree with you as well Spike, I have noticed his name and did actually wonder how he got to set it up like that (obviously you can). I know everyone likes to be individual but there should be some type of regulation with the keyboard characters you can use in order to register.

MemberI think it is a nice change…there should be some limit…but not too much….I doubt people are going to go out now and change their names just because he has his like that.

KeymasterPersonally, I don’t see what the problem is.
Why do we want to impose additional restrictions on people? Is there really any harm in what TåkØÐã has done?

MemberAgree with Jeff, I don’t think it’s too much of a problem. Plus, I think it’s probably rare that the name won’t display properly anyway.
We don’t want to seem too strict.

ParticipantI agree with Jeff too, I know that the majority of fonts used for browsers will show those characters, and I think that it’s a nice change as well, I liked seeing it. Now if there got to be way to many, then I’d limit it, but as for now I feel it’s fine.

ParticipantBan him.
Kidding! I wouldn’t sweat it. I remember the days when I just had to have my nicknames in those weird characters too. I don’t see any harm, if someone can’t read it, who cares? I’m sure it’s not going to hurt anyone. Too many rules suck!

ParticipantThe only problem I see is the posibility of people who are in another country who actually use those letters getting confused.
But in the end… …who cares? It’s just a username. Heck, plenty of people’s usernames are confusing! Sure it makes them a pain to type and I have to go slow to make sure they’re spelled right, but really… …what does it matter?
That and we don’t really have any active people with funky characters do we? I guess I can’t really say since I don’t peek out of my CC cave often, but still…
Like Marcus said, too many rules suck *laughs*

MemberPersonally I dislike (almost despise!) such IDs, but still I see no harm in allowing people to use them if they wish – it’s just another form of self-expression.
Just as long as it doesn’t cause technical problems anywhere, which I guess it doesn’t appear to.

Memberbump This is why I want this enforced, we have nothing but problems:
https://bigblueball.com/forums/forum-support/39843-custom-avatar-just-shows-vbulletin-logo.html
Sites like Digg get along with alphanumeric usernames, and even some games will limit it to proper case, alphanumeric with no spaces. So why should we have to worry about issues with our vB addons with crazy characters and whatnot when we don’t really have to?

KeymasterYou’re the admin. How do you want to enforce it?
March 20, 2007 at 1:52 am #139010Spike
MemberI would say limit it to alphanumeric plus spaces and underscores. A simple RegEx check on registration should do the trick, or there may even be an option already to enforce it.

KeymasterJake, the problem with the custom avatar is (I believe) related to vBSEO. We could simply turn off the “friendly URL” feature for avatars and I *think* the problem would immediately disappear — special characters or no. Let me know if you want me to give that a try.
March 20, 2007 at 3:17 am #139000detn8r
ParticipantIsn’t there a way to “input” additional languages into the friendly URL system, or at least request additional languages be made?
For the record, I received a PM from a member (that created a thread tonight) that his user name be changed. I obviously don’t have the authority to do so, so perhaps Spike you can look into it.
And additionally, when I received a pop up telling me I had a private message, it came with a TON of weird characters (like a 13 year olds MSN name … if you catch my drift, nothing close to what the user name actually was, so I’m a little confused.)
*edit* OK, luckily I got another PM from the same person. Check this.. how does vB choke on THIS as well?
