Is it possible to appear offline on AIM and still IM buddies?
yes, but only one.
1. Connect to the AIM service
2. Direct connect to someone
3. Sign off
You are offline, yet you can talk to them
Mhmm…I think this feature was added to AIM 5.5 Beta, am I wrong?
That’s really weird because I have a friend who always appears offline and she’ll IM me out of the blue…She’s not at all computer saavy so I fugured it would be easy to do, but obviously not. I just downloaded everything (MSN, AIM, Yahoo) separately so I could do that too, but now I’m thinking I should’ve stuck with Trillian.
Oh wait….she HAS AOL has her ISP…That would probably explain it eh?
if she has AOL and not AIM then yea she can appear offline but still be online and talk to you.
SecureAIM I think allows you to be invisable as well.
Thanks for everyones’ help.
does 5.5 let u appear offline?
Again, look at http://www.aim.com, the answer is no.
5.5 does allow you to appear offline, its somewhat tricky to do.. It has to do with the little “eye” next to your buddy list name..and you have to have screennames linked inorder to click it.
An easy way to appear offline is get middle_man from here http://middleman.krunchsoftware.com/ and then type /ghost in any IM window and you will appear offline, just type /unghost or just sign on again to appear online again.
If anyone remembers the program Methodus, at http://www.methodus2000.com mainly used for AOL but also AIM, they had a ghosting option in which you sent a message to the screen name $IM_OFFscreennamehere, with the screenname of who you want to ghost in that spot, not your own, and the message should say ignore[/b]. To reverse it goes to $IM_ONscreennamehere, and it says unignore[/b]. This only works for individual ghosts, but you can talk to the person you ghost, even while not showing up on their buddy list. I don’t think that it reverses automatically, so you have to undo it yourself.
Wow, I tried what you said about direct connecting with someone and signing off, I was amazed, I like finding little things like that Thanks!:)
the new aim beta does allow you to become ” invisable” and chat , no one will see ou as online but you are
Even when ghosting with 5.5, your info can be viewed and it shows your actual online time..
