AIM 5.5 does have the option to “ghost” yourself. You appear offline, but you can still recieve and send messages to people. It’s also good for tricking people out :P. If you have middleman, just type ‘/ghost’ in an IM to someone to ghost yourself (any version of aim). To unghost yourself, type ‘/unghost’.
In 5.5 you can appear offline by clicking the eye; it is really easy; you don’t have to have any screennames linked. Anyone can send you a message (only if they know you’re actually on and manually type in your name or you IM them first) and you can send anyone messages. a few of my friends on really old versions of AIM or AIM express have said they could not send me messages while invisible, but for most it works just fine.
