I got tired of the FastTrack network, with all the fake files, annoying file names, and unreliability. So I decided to try Ares Lite, and its amazing for any type of file download. Download speed is twice as fast as Kazaa, almost every download works, the layout is nice, lots of search results that WORK, and no fake files.
It seems to be the same thing as Kazaa Lite, and is a much improved version of Ares. Kazaa Lite concentrated on new features a new layout, and taking advantage of the network, causing slow downloads and chaos. This concentrates on a stable, clean layout, and doesn’t take advantage of the network, still providing fast, clean downloads.
Ex: Kazaa to Kazaa Lite, Edonkey to Emule
It doesn’t seem to have a site but its all over the place: http://download.com.com/3000-2166-10288301.html
It may look small, but it is very powerful:

What I’ve been using lately is Limewire. It is amazingly fast WAY faster than Kazaa, no ads; you can download anything from Music, to video clips, pictures and programs(I don’t wanna risk that). It is incredibly simple, with a simple layout.
July 7, 2004 at 10:52 pm #78258detn8rParticipantI’m amazed with this P2P app. For example, I downloaded a 700,000KB .avi movie in less than 24 hours. You do the math ๐ It’s incredibly reliable, and I always found what I wanted. I’m impressed.
July 7, 2004 at 11:09 pm #78271Hurricane22491MemberI use Limewire too. It works pretty fast. I think I’ll try this though, and then see which is faster.
[edit: Limewire has better search results, and is usually faster. I wouldn’t say that Ares Lite is bad; it keeps a steady download rate, compared to Limewire.]
July 7, 2004 at 11:57 pm #78272plastidcellsMemberWell I used to use limewire, but switched to Ares (not Ares Lite tho)
Limewire installed this unnecessary java program on my comp which I did not want, and it was screwy with AIM (ie when I had limewire unminimized and a AIM window also open, AIM would repeatedly flash)
I don’t like Limewire’s search very much. You get many irrelevant hits (eg searching for something with two or more words, you might get a hit with one word but not the other) (or searching for a certain title and artist would broaden your results as oppposed to narrow them)
and limewire’s media section sucks (although it’s not important because you normally woulnd’ tbe using it anyway, but it’s annoying)Ares has a search similar to Kazaa’s, which I actually like because it’s very accurate. Speeds are fairly good too
the downloading interface is somewhat flawed tho. one experience is that I started downloading something, then I cancelled it, but then I decided to restart the download, but I was unable to get it to start up again because for some reason it didn’t realize that I had even cancelled the download in the first place… so…July 8, 2004 at 1:47 am #78275AwesomeSauceParticipantQuote:quote:http://www.download.com/3000-2166-10288301.htmlEditors note:This download includes additional applications bundled with the software’s installer file. Hmph. That’s just wrong. ๐

do you mean it’s wrong in the sense that it’s incorrect or it’s wrong as a figure of speech (ie they shouldn’t allow that?)
hmm… maybe i’m just the only one confused?
July 8, 2004 at 2:17 am #78259detn8rParticipantItโs a useless post tbh. It’s only spyware, which can be removed after installment is complete.
July 8, 2004 at 3:00 am #78276AwesomeSauceParticipantOk. So maybe I shouldn’t be complaining.

To point out, the Adware is called “Navhelper” and is optional. It and can be checked or unchecked to be installed during installation.

Your free to check it out The Dude, but there is no reason to post it. When you make a post you need to add useful information. When you’ve tried the program and have an opinion on it, then it would be acceptable to post your views on it. Otherwise no one really cares whether you’re checking it out or not.
