Podcast #3 will go out this Friday. Post your ideas for the show here.
Elisa and Sarah have an idea to do something about IM Safety (in light of the recent bust of the guy from Homeland Security). We’re looking at recording that bit this morning around 9:30 AM PDT — if you’re available.
One note, I’d like to inject more of a conversational style into the podcast… we’re getting there. 🙂

April 9, 2006 at 5:59 pm #142004OreoMemberYup!! And that April is Child Abuse Prevention Month.
April 9, 2006 at 6:38 pm #141995Jeff HesterKeymasterHere’s the recording Elisa, Sarah and Ryan… er… MrEggSalad and I created this morning. I haven’t edited it at all, but post only for review and comment. I think there are still issues with the sound quality.

April 9, 2006 at 7:16 pm #141993Jeff HesterKeymasterEverybody sounds cool, but better quality is definitely necessary. Jeff and Ryan sound crystal clear but in Elisa’s and Sarah’s turn I hear hissing noises and echoes. Frankly it’s kind of creeping the hell out of me even with Elisa’s and Sarah’s cute voices. I want my mommy!
But seriously good topics and stuff and I know this is a rough edit. Err at least I think it is.
April 9, 2006 at 7:58 pm #141996Jeff HesterKeymasterMy comments as I listen through…
- Still picking up someone’s breathing (sounds like someone blowing on the mic)
- Elisa’s voice level too soft
- Sarah’s voice level also too soft, with some “popping”
- When Elisa moves the mic real close, the sound level is ok, but it starts picking up air noise
- Ryan’s voice quality was great — very clear
- We weren’t scripted — which is good — but I think we could have benefited from a little more structure. Just an outline that covers the flow, so everyone knows what we plan to cover, when. It also helps make sure we don’t forget anything.
I’ll play with it later to see if I can edit it to normalize the volume of each voice and remove some of the distracting pops and fuzz sounds. If not, we may need to take one more pass at it.
The content itself I thought was pretty good, although maybe we could add some specifics about what NOT to put in your IM profiles, how parents can check their kids’ IM log files, etc. just to tie it back to the IM side a bit more.
Thanks for the great topic suggestion. I think it’s shaping up nicely.
April 9, 2006 at 7:59 pm #142040sarahtownyMemberWas great fun doing it, Ryan and Jeff’s microphone was much better than us girlies, but I am sure we can sort it all out.
*goes to test my microphone*
April 9, 2006 at 8:09 pm #142047MrEggsaladParticipantYeah..I heard that breathing while recording and thought maybe it was Jeff (since I heard it out of my own speakers). I also heard the echo, and the blowing air. I was laughing again at the end though…hehe. Hey Jeff, any chance you could put up that original we did?

- SafeKids.com
- StaySafeOnline, particularly their section for Family and Children
- And of course, WiredSafety is always a good resource.
April 9, 2006 at 8:40 pm #142027TigerbladeParticipantas i’m listening:
- I agree with the need for structure… i very much like the conversational style, but it did sound like maybe there needed to be a topic list or something.
- I think it was Elisa (due to the lack of accent) kept fading in and out? Maybe find a way to anchor the microphone in one place instead of holding it?
- The breathing. I know not everyone has great mics, but find some sort of breathing/pop filter. You can make one yourself if you’re handy like that.
- There were a few awkward pauses where someone would stop talking and there would be a bit of silence until someone else picked up the conversation… it’s gonna happen with any conversational style podcast, but it’s something to watch out for.
- Sarah. i’ve said it before, but i love english accents for some reason.
- Did someone have some kind of audio playing in the background? It sounds (around 6min 40sec or so) like there are soft voices in the background, maybe it’s just hissing? Actually, now it sounds more like someone has audio feedback from their speakers. Headphones, people. Headphones. First rule, like when calling a radio station, turn off the speakers. Yep, definitely feedback (11:30 or so).
- No rant of the week? :p
- Overall, once the audio issues get evened out, good stuff.
Ok, now that i’ve listened through… overall suggestions are as such. (constructive criticism, if you will… dont take anything too personally)
anyone taking part in the podcasts needs to find a way to position and protect their mic so that the volume stays consistent and unwanted noises (breathing, pops, etc) are minimized. along with the audio, anyone who’s on the line needs to turn their speakers off and use headphones instead. otherwise you get the feedback echo which is really distracting.
for the next one, if everyone had a topic list of some sort, it would help the flow slightly.otherwise, good stuff. i look forward to the finished version.
April 10, 2006 at 3:42 am #141997Jeff HesterKeymasterThis wasn’t intended to be the entire podcast, but one segment. It also includes bits that would normally be edited out first.
April 10, 2006 at 4:37 am #142016Someguy03MemberTo be honest, I think our podcasts need more NEWS. We have tips and discussions and so on, but we seem to lack actual IM news, which is what I think alot of people will be listening for. They want to find out whats new and hot. And should have a part where we just roll off the headlines with quick summarys; We don’t necessarily need to go into discussions over everything. This is a fast paced world and not everyone has the time to sit around and listen to discussions. An example I would give is that I often read Neowin summarys but don’t go into the more detailed article unless I am particularly interested in it. Podcasts aren’t like that- people are forced to endure whatever you throw at them.
And personally I think that our material is a bit weak. The IM Safety discussion could have been more interesting. Someone should have gone first hand into a public IM chatroom and experienced it for themselves and then shared about it (in an AIM chatroom that wouldn’t take more than 15 minutes). It could have been so much more exciting and exclusive.
April 10, 2006 at 7:48 am #142041sarahtownyMemberSomeguy, sorry I really don’t get your points on this one.
Firstly we are only on our third podcast.
The first one was based on what bbb is about and an overview of what we are about. In order for members to understand our forum. As you will know Spike highlighted our reputation system.
The second podcast was discussing different types of IM out there, after all that’s what we are about…
There has been snippets of news Shifter discussed Thoughtsafe and I am sure there will be more news to come.
I know it’s a fast paced world but surely the great thing about a podcast, is the fact that you don’t have to listen to the whole thing all in one go? You can save it and listen to it when you have time.
I appreciate your comments on this don’t get me wrong but I really don’t feel me or anyone else going into a chat room would have made any difference at all to what we discussed.
Basically my point is that we have only just started with this so there will be a learning curve, but personally just hearing IM news and more news would be a total bore. It’s just finding the happy medium and I am sure in time we will.
Personally I like the way this is going.
April 10, 2006 at 8:56 am #142032RabidKittenParticipantI think he’s just saying that it needs more news.
But remember, as Jeff said, this is just one segment. It’s not the whole podcast. I’m sure there’ll be a news run down.
Sorry I’ve been unusually MIA lately. Lot of things hitting the fan. Some ups and downs and all arounds going on…so yeah. But I’d love to try and contribute something to the cast, if not this time around, then another, just need some suggestions. I’m longwinded enough to where I can even make the news sound somewhat interesting *cackles like mad* And we all know I’m certainly not good for much other than parroting or ranting *wink*
