I was just wondering, this is for all the people that say buddy spy is bad. What if you found a flaw in Windows which is highly possible, would you do.
1) Just sit and wish that no one finds out.
2) Complain to microsoft and pray that they do some thing
3) Prove that what you say exists and can be utizised?
4) Give every one the proof and let them decide how they want to use this proof/information?Regarding the question about privacy, what happens when you are in a public chat room but are on invisible in yahoo messenger to your friends? Do you expect privacy then?
Jeff, I am not a supporter of the ways in which buddy spy can be used I am more intererested in finding out if people think software like this should exist? Meaning that should we shoot the messenger for telling us that such flaws exist. By buddy spy being here a lot of people come to know that they are not truely invisible and people may take extra precautions like having multiple ids for different people and things like that. By the way jeff we have not heard your ideas about buddy spy what do you feel and regarding MSN doesnt it have a feature for appearing offline? I am not very familiar with it, I use it very rarely.

November 29, 2004 at 7:17 pm #106172kron_19792000MemberThere are some very legitimate operations that do check for bugs in windows, they do not produce viruses they do produce a proof of concept yes. Tell me some thing would you have belived it is possible to insert malicious code in a pic before microsoft came out with a warning with out proof that the vunerability actually existed, the proof being an exploit. Personally I feel that Microsoft would not do any thing unless they are forced to do so, who is to say that the same is not the case with yahoo?
I understand your point Detn8r and personally I agree with you, people who want to be invisible should be left alone, but my question is, is it better to let people know(keep them informed) or just keep the fact that you are not actually totally invisble under warps?
What if I said it was possible to view a persons webcam with out permission with out using a trojan what would you say?November 29, 2004 at 7:20 pm #106146Jeff HesterKeymasterIf there is a security vulnerability in a software program, it’s better to first contact the software vendor and inform them of the problem. This gives them a chance to correct the vulnerability and protect their customers. If they don’t respond in a timely manner (as is often the case) the next step is to publically report it so that people are aware of the vulnerability and can make an informed decision about whether to continue using the program or not — a sort of personal risk-analysis.
Sites such as iDefense provide a legitimate reporting mechanism for software vulnerabilities. The risk, of course, is that this information becomes available to both the good guys and the bad guys. The bad guys can use it for malicious purposes. The good guys (hopefully the software vendor) will get off their butts and fix their software, and the consumers can determine whether the vulnerability is severe enough to change their use of the software in the meantime.
All that being said, I’m not sure where BuddySpy fits in all this. I don’t see the ability to detect if someone is really online when their status is set to invisible as a vulnerability. It is a bug perhaps, but what is the risk?
And I’m still waiting to hear from the BuddySpy fans on my question: What good and valid purposes can BuddySpy be used for?

November 29, 2004 at 7:51 pm #106153monkey_butt_lolMemberIn a seperatte post I asked about a mystery buddy who had appeared on my list. I could not determine who this person was and got no reply to my PMs. I DID use buddy spy to try and catch the mystery person online, mainly to find out if it was a legitimate friend or someone who somehow got added erroneously… I managed to get a response when I found them invisible and PMed him telling him I knew he was on and I wanted to know who he was. I got back several inquiries about what I was wearing and whether or not I was “nekkid on cam”. SO ~ thank you UnSakred…. BuddySpy DID have a fairly legitimate and certainly helpful use. It just depends on the intent of the user. The faults should therefore be placed on the user, NOT the creator.
December 20, 2004 at 11:24 am #106167DiceMemberI like Buddy Spy, sometimes it’s a usefull tool when you do not feel like just strate up asking some if there cam is on. But’ I can see a downside to it to. I give it 35%good-65%bad
September 15, 2006 at 1:56 pm #106176Perpetualy BlueMemberI use buddy spy to locate my friends as we all go to different rooms, also I know the names of several booters that go to certain rooms that I like to go to, I can check to see if the booters are in, that way I know not to go to that room.
Also, there is people that dont boot, but sit and curse people all day, I would know not to go in that room to be subjected to that language. There are also perverted men on here that go from room to room sexually assulting and harassing women, I can avoid those people by knowing where they are. I go to chat for music and talking , not to be booted or harassed by anyone in any way. Buddy spy allows me to do that by being able to see where the “bad guys” are at. I dont think of it as a invasion of anyones privacy, its a means to know where to go and where not to go.November 16, 2007 at 6:33 pm #106175__GHOST__MemberQuite often, people don’t choose to have yahoo websites hide their status of online or offline, and many people who go invisible in messenger, will show online in your email contacts address book.
However, I’ve known of many instances where Yahoo messenger and/or email address book has given false online and false offline statuses. One of the most common in my observation, is when someone logs out of messenger and their ID still remains online in the friends list for varying lengths of time after the person logged out, sometimes even several hours!
